Optional tube bias tremolo on Fender 6V6 or 6L6 amp

Post by Bananafist »

Someone raised this query on another forum, with not much response, but it caught my interest and I thought I'd raise it here.
The hypothesis is to either a) change from stock to tube bias trem, or b) have a switchable otion of either type.
I've built a couple of amps, but my theoretical knowledge is limited.
Can anyone point me to an article/schematics or similar on this, and how to do it - if indeed, its feasible?
Any comments, advice, welcome and appreciated.
Thanks
if it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is...................

Yeah, the link provided by Martin is it. I can't think of a good reason to use an optocoupler (roach) in the trem circuit when you can use the bias wiggle method. The latter is tremolo "to die for" and simpler, IMO, to build.

The bias trems sound richer and more engaging to me, but some people really like the waveform of the roach trem. What they're used to or heard on albums they grew up with, maybe.

I built an AB763 with opto trem and I really like it.

It sounds like... a Fender 8) :D

The '68 drip edge SF Deluxe I finished recently had the optocoupler trem, which I've never played with in-depth. At least in that amp I wouldn't touch it, after fixing a shorted wire the tremolo came to life and sounded great for what it was. I like the bias-wiggle trem as well but there's no reason one can't keep a good example of each type around :D.
