@ Roe:
Thank you very much for the offering, very kind of you. I just needed the information in case someone asked me to build (or repair) a 6G6B, I am not in need of the pot as of this time. But knowing that Weber is a potential source (I just checked) is certainly a valuable information.
Appreciate your feedback and thanks again.
Thanks to Teleguy61 also!
All the best.

Sure if you have them fine, not sure if the GP buys you much in the HV rectifier locations, but I would use only 2 in series since they are 1.5A rated.LarryLarry wrote:Anyone know if it's ok to use a IN5399G diode (1000v, 1.5A) in place of a IN4007 (1000v, 1A)?

Re: Which 6G6 Bassman?
Any first hand opinions on whether to use the SS rectifier as per the 6G6-B layout, or use a GZ34? I'm recycling a 5E3x2 build that already has a fixed bias adj and a GZ34 rectifier. I'll be using this strictly for guitar, and higher gain (not metal) is what I'm after.
Re: Which 6G6 Bassman?
I installed a tube socket in my main 6G6B build (not the 1 channel combo), and have been using a SS slug in the socket. Sounds great, and allows me to switch to a GZ34 if I want to (I haven't though).

Re: Which 6G6 Bassman?
That's a great idea, very convenient. I've got Weber copper caps for a 5U4 and 5Y3, I'll have to watch for a GZ34...

From the ratings I see no problem.

(On the pages "Not Recommended for New Designs")
How noisy the diode is in the circuit I can't say, never used them. You might have to try a combination of caps and resistors as a noise filter, if this was the case
By using glass passivated diode, you can guarantee a specified reverse recovery time over a 1N4007 (unless 1N4007GP) The reverse recovery time of ordinary 1N4007 diode can vary a lot.
But do you need this in Guitar amp? If you have a source for the diodes that are cheap, no harm/no fowl.
I use UF4007 diodes, their cheap enough and an improvement over the 1N4007 diodes and have a fast recovery time.
Best Regards,
Steve
PS And now for a troll comment, most Guitarists cannot distinguish if a guitar amp has SS diode or tube at normal listening levels in blind tests.
Re: Which 6G6 Bassman?
Larry if I was going after the "b" circuit, I would be more concerned with the actual period correct B+ voltages than the rectifier type. Although, I am setting mine up to use both rectifer types, I setup the PT transformers to provide blueprint voltages at the modern 121-123V AC feed with a s/s rectifier. FWIW, for s/s rectifers I'm using four UF5408's instead of the six 1N4007 and a UF4007 in the bias position.LarryLarry wrote:Any first hand opinions on whether to use the SS rectifier as per the 6G6-B layout, or use a GZ34? Re: Which 6G6 Bassman?
Excellent info TM - thanks!
Since this is a re-build, I have the luxury of voltage readings just prior to dismantling it. With a GZ34, 2 Tung Sol 5881s and 2 12AX7s fired up I'm getting 429vdc on the plates of the 5881s. 330vac on the plates of the GZ34. That seems to be pretty spot on from what I can tell so I think I'm ok there. I'm using an old SS Fender Sidekick 35 Bass chassis so I'm not trying to be spot on with anything - other than the quality of the build and quality of the sound!
Another question, I never use the low inputs (Inputs 1 w/1 meg resistors), do I have to do anything if I just use the 2 input 2's?

Re: Which 6G6 Bassman?
The low inputs on the 6G6B are cool. Since the bass channel can be so aggressive, the low input allows you to temper that aggressiveness somewhat. I'd keep them.
Re: Which 6G6 Bassman?
There is info from my thread about an alternate circuit to using the odd 350k pot.Is the treble pot on the normal channel (350k/70k tap) available, or is there another way to sub it?

GZ34 rectifier
My 6G6B has the old hole already done for the rectifier, (blocked off with a cap[not capacitor])and it was originally used for a GZ34 which was originally used in the 6G6 circuit, so I say go ahead if you have the 5V leads from your PT or an extra transformer that will give you that 5v, for the tube, along with the high voltage taps from your PT.
Starting with the "A" circuit (6G6A), the GZ34 was dropped for a solid state diode rectifier. I prefer a GZ34 if I can use one, over diode rectification.
shouldn't be a problem and will probably sound fantastic.
I thought about doing that to mine, but I didn't 'only' to keep it original.
as for the 350K/70 k tap pot, The only thing I don't like about the new ones, is 1) no diagram, and 2) it is tiny. Otherwise, I have used several from Doug's site and they work fine. Weber has them too.

GZ34 and 5E3X2
on the GZ34 and 5E3X2....
I already did that on my double deluxe and it works like a champ.
I recently gave that amp to my Luthier, and he loves it.
Darren Welch of Lubbock, tx used it for a while and loved it too.
I call it my "sneaker", as it is built in a deluxe chassis, in a 1x12 [deluxe style] cabinet (western leather tooled tolex), wheat grill, and I stuck a couple of silver horse heads on it to finish that 'country' look. The sound will sneak up on your butt and kick it, and it is plenty loud.
He wants me to go back and add groove tube 10's (6V6), so it won't have quite so much overdrive. But I kind of liked the overdrive. It sends my pedals off the wall.
To each his own.
He is using it for steel guitar.
