Different Versions of Same Speaker

Post by The New Steve H »

I probably should have asked this when I posted about the 16-ohm speaker I got stuck with.

Should I expect the 16-ohm version of a speaker to sound like the 8-ohm version, assuming I run it using the 16-ohm taps on my amp?

Pretty much (setting to one side the influence of any NFB loop that may be in the amp, and how that is wired to the OT secondary(s) ). There might be 'slight' (almost inaudible) treble roll-off with the 16R (due to the slightly lower output current) but then again there might not - depending on the sensitivity of the speaker, the anality of the listener and so on.

Thanks. I guess I'll keep the 16-ohm speaker. Can't hurt to have two 1 x 12s with different impedances.

If you're running the 16R and the 8R in parallel, that's 5.3R, which will lower the reflected load slightly at the expense of output power, but it should sound slightly bluesier when pushed
