EV SRO Coffee Can with '80s EV12L?
I searched and couldn't find anything on this combination. I have the '80s EV12L in a TL806 Boogafunk 1x12 cab, which is great, and I just was loaned a coffee can EV SRO to check out, I think I can probably buy it if I like it. It is 3dB more efficient than the EV12L (103 vs 100 dB @ 1M), but only rated for 60W RMS.
In a TL806 cab, would this be a good combination in parallel with the EV12L, especially for D-tones? I kinda think it might be, I'm also an Altec 417 fan, interested in anyones's experience/opinions here.

Yes but won't it still only handle 60 watts even when paired with a 200w EVM?

That's right Tom. I was thinking even with a 100W amp, if it's in parallel with the other speaker it won't see more than 50W if I don't dime it. Which is unlikely because with those speaker efficiencies I don't think I'd ever get near that.
I was more concerned with a possibly audible volume difference because of the higher efficiency of the SRO.

What about attenuating the Coffee can -3db which would have the added benefit of upping its apparent power rating.

David I'm working on getting a SRO 12L right now, and pair it with matching 1x12s for a full "stack"! I might have the project dine soon. That 3db is an audible 2x difference, correct?

Yeah the SRO and EvM12L is kind of a funny pair, the don't quite blend together well. It may be even better to use another AlNiCo speaker.

Why? Because of the efficiency difference? I thought they were supposed to be similar in tones?boldaslove6789 wrote:Dumble 4x12's anyone?amplifiednation wrote:David I'm working on getting a SRO 12L right now, and pair it with matching 1x12s for a full "stack"! Yeah the SRO seems to break up faster than the EvM12L.... the one that I had did anyways.
Edit: I Play Loud though, I mean really freakin Loud

Re: EV SRO Coffee Can with '80s EV12L?
David, I am totally with you on the 417's. I'd say the 60w is pretty modest for the SRO, so don't be afraid to try it out as long as the load is correct. While the SRO won't be working any 'harder' being paired up with a 12L on the same amp, it will compress sooner. Might sound cool if you go with the SRO on top and 12L on the bottom in a vertical set up. It will sound noticeably different from their orientation and where you are standing as different frequencies travel through the air at different rates.
I have never been a fan of the concept since so much is predetermined when it gets to the end result of a speaker, look at how much crap the signal has gone through already in one of these amps to get there! Then you are relying on a different magnet and some different paper to make the sound walk, when in the end they will be fighting each other and many extremes as apposed to working in harmony. I've always found it better to just split the signal between 2 different 1x12 amp arrangements than one amp and 2 different speakers. All depends on what you are going for, don't be afraid to try it out!
SRO is a great speaker BTW. If you don't want it let me know

I use an SRO in a ported 1x12 cab and it's been my go to cab for about three years now. That speaker sounds good with whatever I throw at it. I find it doesn't break up really at all and is a pretty flat speaker EQ wise, i.e. it's pretty transparent and lets the amp sound like itself. I'd say snag it if you can, you won't regret it!

Re: EV SRO Coffee Can with '80s EV12L?
I've got one of each. The EVM12L is in a Thiele cab and the SRO is in a side-ported 1X12. I like them both but not necessarily together. Can't really even tell you why. The Thiele is usually next to another one with a Swamp Thang in it and that is a good combination. The SRO is generally by itself. It has a warmer (read more forgiving) tone with a little break-up -- but not a hell of a lot. If the EVM ever broke-up, nobody told me. No experience with the 417s.

Re: EV SRO Coffee Can with '80s EV12L?
Thanx all for your help! I'll be putting it in a TL806 cab this weekend. Will let you know what I think, also what the amp builder I got it from thinks too. This will be two separate but identical TL806 cabinets in parallel.
He has a very sophisticated 4xEL84 build in a 2x12 combo with a Fane AXA 100W and a Celestion Gold that seem to balance well. Obviously there is a power handling mismatch there too, but both speakers are Alnico and their efficiencies are close, 101dB and 100dB.
