How to Get Knob Off Holy Grail?

Post by The New Steve H »

A friend of mine left his old-style Holy Grail pedal with me to fix, and I haven't done anything yet. I need to get on it. He said it acted weird when he turned the main knob, so I figured I should check out the pot.

Problem: I see no way to get the pot off the chassis. The knob has no setscrew. Should I just yank it and pray the box doesn't come apart?
Relax. It's SUPPOSED to smoke a little.

This sounds like a title for a Monty Python skit/movie--"Get Your Knob off my Holy Grail"

Fold a sneaker shoestring over twice, placing two strands of lacing on each side of the knob and carefully put straight up.

The shoe string is a neat idea. The EH knobs are just "press fit" on and should come off relatively easy. Use something to protect the enclosure and get something to slip under the knob and gently rock back and forth slightly while applying pressure upward.

Stick with it -- there was a bit of irrelevant music video in front of it. Wait for the price, around 3:00. Best 3:50 minutes I spent all day!

It slices! It dices! And it'll get your knob off! Order before midnight tonight and we'll throw in a second set for only the cost of shipping and handling!

Try the shoestring trick. It worked great removing the knobs on my guitar.

I just use pliers, and new knobs.

Try the handkerchief trick:

You take a handkerchief (or bandana) and work one edge under the knob. Then you wrap the edge around the knob and start twisting the handkerchief until it gets tight. Grip the twisted part in your hand and put your thumb on the knob. Pull firmly and straight up and the knob will come off.

Use a guitar pick to lift the skirt of the knob if it is pressed down too far.

It works for guitars.

That is the most times I have written the word "handkerchief" in my entire life. No wonder nobody uses them anymore.
