I don't want to talk about this, I don't want to talk about this.

I don't want to talk about this.

It's no wonder. They all are very inconsistant. Out of 80 or so amps, 3 are the best ever, 10 are ass kicking fire breathers, 20 sound like typical Marshalls, and the rest need to be sold, rebuilt, or parted out for spares, and that is just what we did. Bought every $150 pre-73 4-holer I saw, and threw it on the truck. *clunk* Everyone needs spare parts when they get to Iowa.

If you played whatever Marshall you found in the music store in your home town you'd have a 3% chance of finding "awesome". Inconsistant bitches, they are.

If you have experiance with marshall amps and have played many, then just by listen to early van halen will tell you that the marshall van halen used wasnt stock.Ive heard some good sounding plexi's but not to the extent of van halen's sound.(Beyond great sounding). There were many well known player's back then and today that use marshall's and none had that sound.

Ask husky. You heard his amp. He doesn't likely have many secrets to share on that circuit. There isn't magic in anything but the sound. There it is, really.

I bet he's seen the insides of lots of transitional 68s with 820Rs both v1 cathodes. Just a guess. Why are the British domestics always better on step down transformers? That is my question.

Ok, back to goat suckers?

I listened to the clip listed above and it sounds good, but it needs more edge- gain for the early van halen sound.I use my ears I dont need to ask anybody. There are ISO van halen tracks on youtube(guitar only)from the original recordings, check out the early recordings(songs) like running with the devil and you can hear the difference.

John's amp sounds awesome.Sounds a lot like EVH tone to me.Maybe better.

Makes me want to build a Marshall clone.I'm sure mine wouldn't sound that good especially if I'm playing it.

First off, excellent sounding amp Mr. Suhr.

A member here - Krinkle - built a 12 series Plexi from Metro a few years ago and nailed the EVH tone. It can be done. I am sure you could dig up a few clips of his over at Metro, or any of Marks - Rockstah - clips too for convincing tone. Edit- see post below for link.

I have come very close with both a jumpered plexi and a jcm 800 frontend driven with a hot humbucker in a LP. I would suggest you play with the preamp voltages - lowering them.

KOC has mentioned many times over at powerscaling.com that a simple jcm 800 frontend with an additional free running gain stage after the tone / master following the extra gain stage with an additional simple tone stage to dial the power amp / room is the easiest way.

Hah! I thought I thought of that, not the 800 thing, but the late section with a simple tone control, or straight cut even. Thanks, John!

John the SL68 sounded fantastic in the hands of a great player and studio rig.

Built in 90v variac and bias, nice. :)

Each van halen album sounds different.VH1(first album)is the most aggressive and brown then the rest of the recordings.VH1 is the sound that most guitarist are looking for. When the first album was releast in 1978,that album blew people's minds(sound and playing).

Good luck, a lot of us here were around back then and have been building amps for many years, and are familiar with your quest. It can be done and at some point you have to believe.
