INA Finally Done (for now)

Post by DerStever »

Here's some pix of INA - cabinet work done by John Eberl of CT - master cabinet maker extraordinairre. My previous studio date got delayed but I'm supposed to go in end of March so I'll have some clips then - I'm still experimenting with this amp - I had a Hellatone Vintage 60 in the cab before and it was nice - however this is a Celestion Alnico Gold and is supposed to be great - we'll see once she breaks in a bit.

Tubes are Winged C on the output and Mullard Westinghouse / Mullard everywhere else - at least thats this week....

Hey Paul - the Alnico Gold is a sixty watt rated speaker, developed by Celestion for just that reason - to have a high powered version of the Blue. Reports have been good from what I have read, very similar in tone to the Blue...

Of course, as you and I have discussed before, not everyone likes the sound of an alnico speaker... I prefer ceramic magnets myself.

Wicked cool! Very Art Deco. If it sounds half as cool as it looks, it'll be killer.

We blew one in Kenilworth. It's still somewhat of a mystery as to what happened as the failure was under less than scientific conditions. I will say that there were a lot of amps and a lot of speakers in play that day, the Gold was the only reported failure.

There are any number of Celestions that will handle anything an Express will dish out. I'd prefer not to risk a substantial portion of my paycheck on this particular amp / speaker combo.

Mr. Ruby is right. The Express is well over 60 watts when played dirty! You need at least two of those speakers!

sorry if its a stupid question, and i dont mean to offend, but if you went through the trouble of getting such a nice headbox and matching cab made, why rip off the komet connie look?

Sorry Ive been away on vacation - thanks for your comments - made my day, coming from you folks whom I respect so much.

Tthe Alnico is supposed to handle 50 watts - we'll see what it does, but frankly I use an attenuator all of the time so I doubt if I'd ever hit 60 watts with the express anyway. AND I plan to build a Liverpool with the output tube switching from 2 to 4 so that wont be an issue either. Not sure which head will eventually reside in the box.

I may even go with a 2x12 using Vintage 30s instead - this single speaker was an accident and a new baffle board is being made incase I don't like this. It'll be easy enough to convert and I can use the Alnico in my 18watt GDS combo easily enough. The advantage for us older guys is 1 speaker is lighter than two - especially in a hardwood cab.

The "ripoff" goes way way back for an old wooden floor model radio look -besides, I like it and its for me, and not for sale. Komet also uses tolex and I didn't. The other aspect of it is with the open back and grilled sunray front there is lots of air circulation for the EL34s or 6V6s whichever I use. I suppose I could have inverted it to be different, but what the hey...... no offense taken and its not a dumb question - its just when something looks good to you, you go with it. Kudos to Komet for the basic idea but I likes my version better.

While we are on the subject though - according to a thread on another site - clipping is more dangerous to a speaker than clean - so that being said am I still even with the attenuator in danger of taking out the gold Alnico say at 4 DB attenuation and running the amp at 2:00 per se?

That's safe. At 4db down, you're taking away more than half the power to the speaker. So, it's the same thing as asking if two of these speakers could handle the power and I think so...

The Gold sounds really good - my first cab with this was an open back Fender Twin II cab with a Celestion V30 and Greenback - this gave me some nice bass and jangle - glistening highs. However the single Alnico does the same if not better - its a great speaker for this amp and I suspect if I put a 'pool in there it'll be even nicer.
