Finally you build my amp. Don't mock me.
Signatures have a 255 character limit that I could abuse, but I am not Cecil B. DeMille.

Actually, years back I built an Express clone way before any D Clones. I figured I would try one again.Reeltarded wrote:Finally you build my amp. Don't mock me.

I love the old components people source and use!
I mean, I would have trouble selling such an amp to someone, unless I was 100% the component was good. And even then, I think I would provide some extended warranty for that part of the curcuit.
But never the less, I do it myself all the time. It saves me money, and I like the nostalgia and the story... guy makes capacitor, capacitor gets sold... capacitor gets installed in equipment in the 70's... equipment fails and gets thrown out... young guy guts it and uses it to make music.
The circle of life... beautiful!

I don't build amps to sell, I couldn't make one zinc penny and I truly admire anyone that can manage to pay some bills from doing this stuff.greekie wrote:I love the old components people source and use!

99.9% of the old parts I use are NOS. The robin egg PVC's are virgin NOS and are certainly old, but I never install old parts(caps) without testing or reforming them. The RIFA PEG's are fresh as I special ordered them through Allied for Marshall builds; unfortunately they longer carry them but Mouser has started to carry them.

From what I've seen, you'd have no problem selling your gear.ToneMerc wrote:I don't build amps to sell, I couldn't make one zinc penny and I truly admire anyone that can manage to pay some builds from doing this stuff.

I live in Europe. We have RoHS, CE and all that crap. Besides that, I offer full warranty for two years. I want people to be comfortable with my gear. And at the same time I don't wanna be doing repairs all the time. I want it to work and do the promotion of my brand for me.
So as you can see, I am with good reason only building stuff with parts that I know I can rely on. Not that a good old cap can't last 30+ more years, but I'd rather not take the chance.
For the same reason I have a setup for "burning in" a new amp. It tests it playing music at 50-100% capacity in extended periods of time, and at the same time removes any harshness that newer components have. I am lucky to have a room in my basement where it can go its ways. Speakers wired out of phase, and there's practically no noise. Can't be bad!
