How would I do this??????

Post by dreric »

I was at a local techs house yesterday and he had made the coolest thing out of a Leslie 120. A Leslie 120 is a single 12" with the rotating baffle, I have one and I want to make this thing he made.

He mounted a second 12" in the back panel of the Leslie and a controller which would allow him to switch between the Leslie 12", the panel/cab 12" or to play both.

He used an old slider switch from a organ to switch. He said you could do it with a toggle switch but I'd need to put a capacitor on it to keep it from popping.

..................then there's the impedance thing! Can you ask an amp to switch impedance on the fly like that? He did!

An on/on/on DPDT with the speaker out in the middle?

Suggestions?

Thanks

Eric

Your impedance questions... Yes mark before break contact switch. so the amp never see's an open load on the Iron. You may also want to add a resistor network to the OT tap as a safety in the event the switch fails it'll give a load and give you hopefully enough time to shut down the amp with out causing damage.

The rest of this looks like a carpentry job.

Yes. Make connection before break connection. Many of the switches you use every day are mbb, and others not so much lol

Many rotary switches are mbb.

Switches And relays are made two ways

Make before break - as it switches for a split second both contacts are hot. Then the one that was currently hot shuts off and the new contact is hot.

Break before make - the contacts of the switch only make contact if the connection is making contact.

If you use a break before make it will for a split second give the OT an open load. This could damage the OT and cause tube failure. If you go this route put the amp in standby before changing the switch.

Thanks for the tips. It makes sense as the slider switch he was using had big paddles which made connection before breaking the connection.

so.......... is you would pretend that, electronically, I am functionally illiterate and only know what I know from sucking up to the smart folks on this form. Where would I find such a switch (stomp?) and what cap/resistors would be good to eliminate popping?

Thanks

Well 3 selectable positions leaves you with a couple options.

1.) Two footswitches using DPDT A/B and Both
http://www.tdpri.com/forum/stomp-box/12 ... witch.html

2.) relay switching and a momentary foot switch (which may require external power) This setup would most likely require you to always have to select up 1,2,3 to get back to a lower setting. If you are in 2 and want 1 you have to go through 3 to get to 1.

3.) rotary selector switch, 1, 2, 3
