Interesting discussion. Given that I'm an amateur, I probably make more mistakes than I'd like and I need a way to fix them. I find braid not all that useful except maybe to give a final cleaning. I rely on a Soldapullt SS350. This one has a metal barrel and the end that holds the tip seems to be made of silicone. I could probably use a new tip, but it is still working well. It gives plenty of vacuum and can draw off quite a bit of wet solder when properly placed on the work. You can hold the tip right up to the iron and it holds up. Not sure what the tip is made of, but no ordinary plastic. I bought mine on eBait for around $10 shipped at least 3 years ago.

When I come across a new type sucker I buy it hoping to find one that doesn't clog so easy. The Soldapullt Tom posted is the best I've tried. But you should retire it when it gets too old, before the back end flies off along with all the stuff inside. If anyone knows of the ultimate (simple/cheap) solder pump please post. Soon I can see what Europe offers - maybe the Germans make an Uber-Duber Sucker.

Why would it be the Germans? Do they some special talent with regard to sucking? :P

No but just maybe they still make a well engineered uncloggable solid built metal ergonomic sucker to last a lifetime. When I go to the EU I'm surprised how many extremely nice tools Europeans still make, though it's less and less every year. The odds are with something like this it'll be the same OEM Chinese Radio Shack ones seen here. I screw up a lot - I merit a good solder sucker.

There's a german brand called Introvac....... which I doubt is made in Germany, but anyway.. 8)
OTOH you'll find prices higher than US, if you didn't know that beforehand..

Have you ever welded MIG/TIG? Your idea works great, but I advise you set up a heat gun to create a shield to desolder under. The suction creates a cold spot.

Found it, looks great - Once set up it'll be one of the first things I get. Thanks.

The handheld solder suckers are great and not too messy when you spray some potentiometer cleaner in them. With that spray in there, the small solder stuff mostly stays in the sucker and the system mooves freely and well lubricated. Have fun!

That's weird, they don't say anything about it, even what brand it is.
Tom

Don't let that smoke out!
