Fender Jaguar - which one to get dammit?

Post by tubeswell »

Dilemna for 2012. I'm turning 50 this year and while on holiday I got a severe case of geetar GASitis.

So I'm looking at either the:

1) MIM Classic Player in Candy Apple Red
http://www.rockshop.co.nz/shop/guitars/ ... e-red.html

Okay so its not USA made, but its half the extortionate price for me. Anyone tried/got one and has a view they would like to share?

2) MIJ (or is that CIJ now? heh heh) Limited Edition '66 Sunburst with Block inlays. http://www.rockshop.co.nz/shop/guitars/ ... burst.html

I love the retro look but Hmmm, Anyone care to share an opinion of this model? It is supposedly 'more authentic' (yeah righht) I hear various things about jap made fenders...

3) Made in USA 50th anni model - seems to be based on the MIM classic player format (9.5" neck radius and closer bridge and tailpiece) but will cost me exactly 2 x as much (when it arrives here?) however as I'm gonna be 50 soon, does the price really matter anymore?

Some counselling needed please.

I have a 1963 Jag.
It's in pieces right now but I plan on restoring it some time in the future.
I bought it around '73 and it was my first "real" electric guitar.
It had a sunburst finish when I got it but I soon stripped it like a kid and stained it.....

They are kind of quirky because of the shorter scale and the bridge system on them is not very well designed.

That being said, I really like the block necks.

The CIJ guitars are very high quality and hold their value.

Not sure what prices are like there or what your budget is but if I were you I would try to play as many as you can at your local stores.
They are kind of a weird guitar and feel very different to play.

I really like that 66'. I saw one for sale locally a couple of years ago for $600. It sold the same day, and I haven't seen one for sale since. If I were buying a jag, that one would be it. The only negative for me is the 7.25" neck radius, but not a big deal.

The Japanese built Fenders are the best made since 1963. My opinion, sure.

The Mexican Fenders are ummm thick with paint and I haven't played one that blew up my kilt up.

The electronics on either can be a bad joke.

Some Jaguar fans here, eh? My son has an all-original '62 sunburst. I've worked on it a bit, but just cleaning, set-up, and replacment of the neoprene foam under the pickups (which looked like burnt cookies when he got it). Interesting that there is a 50th anniversary model; that's in addition to the American Vintage reissue that came out a while back. The bridge is a little wierd, but it seems to play and stay in tune just fine.

Honestly, I'm not sure I have ever picked up a MIM Fender guitar that blew up my kilt (great phrase, if it's not Scottish, it's crap! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KrQxQPG8JdE)

The bodies seem lighter. Paint thicker. Sound duller. And a freakin lack of radius.

My '73 strat has a 7 inch radius and I can bend three steps without any dropout.

I have a '65 in Burgundy Mist it was one of 3 made to promote the color. Originally Sunburst, then before leaving the factory it was resprayed Burgundy Mist for the area reps to promote the up coming color line.

One was destroyed by a drunken rock'n roll encore, one is at Fender HQ in Scottsdale, AZ. One in my collection.

I take it out about once a year and put through the paces. Original case and instrument cord, frozen in a rat's nest from living in the case for 50+ years.

Fender just released a signature model Jaguar that emo guys have been giving positive reviews. However I'm not sure of the value of an emo guy's opinion. Don't they just cry a lot? The signature model is for the guitarist from duran duran. It was based on his touring guitar that he assembled using jaguar parts and then modd'n the electronics and hardware. If you don't go vintage Pre '80's I'd give the signature a serious look over.

Thought it was pretty fucked that one of those guys on American Idol totally ripped Chris Cornell's version of Billy Jean.

And before you condemn me for watching, my wife is a fan.

You can probably find a vintage refin for the price of that Mexican Jag.
The market is pretty soft right now so you should be able make a good deal.
A vintage refin, if it is done well, will hold its value.
A new one won't.
