What would you add/change to this design?

Post by leadfootdriver »

Yesterday I redid my practice amp into a sort of Mini Bad Cat with a Vox tone stack using what parts I had laying around. It sounded nice and clear, but not a ton of gain. Really dynamic tho!

So today I added another gain stage, and put a SPDT to switch it in or out. It sounds glassy and Vox Top Boosty with it in. It cleans up pretty good when you roll back too. But I'm sure it can be better. That's where you guys come in. :)

I stink at drawing schematics, but hopefully you guys can make some sense of it.

Check it out!

I guess one thing that I'd like to change is that when I get into power clip, the tone gets a blurry.

How could I make it a bit more aggressive and gritty when I get into power clip?

You need a coupling capacitor between volume pot wiper and output tube grid. Or is it just a drawing error?
Also, please don't draw boxes around capacitor symbols, it's confusing.

There seems to be a cap before the volume. But there is no grid-stopper on the third stage?

To help you on your schematic, it looks good but the symbol for a capacitor is

Tom

Don't let that smoke out!

You've fixed the power grid having a good reference to ground, but the 3rd triode stage still has its grid directly coupled to the second stage plate. You need another cap between the 2nd & 3rd stages.

More errors in the drawing. I did change the cathode resistor in the power tube to 150R tho.
