Yea, there is a slight difference in tone. The lower voltage setting has a touch less highs, and is just slighly less clean. The higher voltage has a bit more bell quality to it. I don't notice it unless I play my single coil and really pay attention, switching back and forth. I think I notice the highs being more present in the higher voltage more.

Here's a gutshot, considering the existing layout and how many mods I've made, I think I did well keeping it organized. I certainly learned a TON from this amp and the X10 clone I did. Once I get my stuff to build the dummy load I will post scope shots.

You can see the shielded runs and the spot where my burned rail resistor roasted the turretboard a bit. I'm pissed about that, but hey chicks dig scars! I think there might be a metal shaving stuck under the mosfet because I had the chip loose, all was good. I tightened it down (w the white plastic insulator ring) and the R burnt (and that was all I did different). Then I loosened it, replaced the R and all is fine. So gotta look into that more because I do want to secure it better.

I put a little doc together on a troubleshoot for this amp with scope shots, schemo, etc...in case anyone wants to read:

http://chicagocadcam.com/ChrisHahn/supre/Supre.doc

The amp has a very rich, tight bass response. Not sure if this is due to cascodes having "expanded range" or whatnot, but it develops a much clearer and punchier sound at the speaker than any of the other amps I have, or that I recall to have played. It does a decent clean to mean, I think I have some ideas on how to improve that now that I've learned more, but the cleans are around 6 on the guitar and at 10 it is pretty raw but smooth, and not overbearing. There is a difference in volume but it isn't an unuseable difference. The highs are clear and not too bright. I know, you all want clips....

Surfsup,

Great idea on the Coscode and well done on making it work... yes we want clips.

I continue to read and re-read through Merlin's book. Although my capacity to follow him is often limited, he really has thought through a lot of what we ought to know. As I read through the book, the chapter on the Coscode really grabbed me, so your project has been great. I got to learn and see an actual build without a great deal of effort on my part... Forums can be extremely cool.

What grabbed me about the Coscode was the claim that you can get a pentode-ish sorta preamp feel using a 12AX7. This is oversimplified and understated on my part and you want to read Merlin to know what he actually said... It does seem like you can get yet another flavor of tone, and a good flavor and while still using the familiar 12AX7 in a familiar location... how many more of you are now planning your next AC30 with this in mind??

Good job!

I'm wondering how a cascode not at the input would be (overdriven)...? not for this build though! I'm done with my version of this amp...thanks again for the inexpensive yet quality kit. I think I rebuilt it 4 times so it got some attention and I learned a lot!

Check out Doug Hammond's Firefly amp. Cascoded front end into a self split 12AU7 output.

D, that also has it at the input. I was wondering what it would sound like not at the input so the signal would be greater and possibly compressed or distorted...

Whoops! I missed the operative *not* in your statement. Never mind then!
