Express tone stack with Fender 250kA pots?

Post by steeve_a »

I'm thinking about rewiring the Rhythm channel of my Mesa Boogie Maverick as an Express. Hey- it has 3 gain stages with the tone stack after the first. That sure sounds like an Express candidate to me.

The tone stack uses 250kA pots for treble and bass (like a BF Fender). I know that the Wrecks work better with 1MA treble and bass pots but I was wondering if anyone has gotten good results with 250kA pots.

The other issue is that the B+ going to the preamp tubes is 190vdc. The Express uses a higher voltage. Will that create a problem?

Although I hate to lose the BF-style Maverick Rhythm channel it sure would be nice to have a Trainwreck style preamp on that side to go along with the Dumblesque preamp on the Lead channel.

Thanks!

Steve Ahola

P.S. I traced out the Rhythm channel on the pcb tonight and I think that the Express rewire is feasible.

Considering all the variables it's difficult to predict the values that will sound good to you out the speaker. Definitely use the Duncan Tone Stack Calculator to see how changing the pots (and caps) will affect the relative results.

I use 250k and 250k on my Express-like setup but I have a larger bass cap. Looking at the TS Calculator I'm now thinking of going with a 500k for the bass control. I could use a little more bass in my setup, which is not true to the Express circuit.
If it says "Vintage" on it, -it isn't.
