Another trick I use is two spoons from the kitchen. The round side of the spoon on the faceplate and wedge the front of each of them under the knob. Then push the handles gently down toward and the knob will come up evenly. Use a cloth under the spoons for extra protection.

Now that is a good idea as long as you can get behind the knob.
