There's a useful and free tone generator out there
one place I found it: http://www.world-voices.com/software/nchtone.html
real easy to use, one you dump on your lap top or tablet.
its got a pink source too, there are also share ware RTA, anyone pinking their amps to get a picture of they're response?

Re: NCH tone generator
I use RTA smarrt live software with earthwork microphone calibrated to 140db in the studio /live.
Keep in mind the RTA is only as good as the calibration source / preamp and or microphone you use.

smaart v.7 is $$$, still looking for a share ware of a older version
RTA are getting more available, because of the accuracy issues I know several guys who just won't trust them, but they do give an "OK" picture.
It also depends upon the questions you try to resolve with it, and the room your working in.
I found a good use for RTA maintaining monitors with a mic at 1 meter which is why the thought of using one on an amp seemed practical.

Re: NCH tone generator
Smarrt was smart about preventing shareware. each program is given a license code that is registered to both the user and the "One" computer they install it on. if you need to transfer the program or the computer crashes it can only be reinstalled once on the original machine. that is why you don't see it circulating in free land.
If you use it as a tool for work it's worth every penny if it's a toy it's probably out of most peoples grasp.
Software, Laptop, USB pre, Microphone, Calibration Equipment, Stand, Cables and ATA case. roughly $4500. Though it is accurate and the standard by which others are judged.
I monitor mixes (both feedback and SPL), and use it to pick out hidden or ghosting trouble freq. in a loud situations, as well as level match in heavy mixes.
I've used it to take snap shots of instruments and double check microphone placement the following day. Tune speakers, rooms, line arrays, monitors, amplifiers. etc.
the trick is knowing what you are working with is correctly showing what is going on once you can trust the test equipment you can do amazing things with it.

I use the android apps. Soundform and RTA Analyzer, a condenser mic and my scope. The Soundform app generates a variety of signals, sine, square, triangle, pink and white noise, you set the freq and the app displays the signal from the phone's mic on a little scope display on the app window. Not lab quality but very useable, and FREE!
Re: NCH tone generator
I'm always in for the free and cheap, but getting by only goes so far...
after a while you have to invest.
You mentioned calibration equipment?

Re: NCH tone generator
There are several.... the Rightmark Audio Analyser, another one called Audioanalyser etc etc...
there was one available for a few euros at www.audiosoft.de which all of a sudden had disappeared, - was quite popularin the HiFi crowd...
Rightmark is also used quite a lot by the HiFi buffs...
For pink noise testing you'll need a good spectrum analysis function...
Gooogle is .......
EDIT : a calibrated microphone is handy - like the Beringer ECM8000 which is quite cheap ( 50-60$) but well worth it's price....
The Panasonic WM-61 elecrete capsule is only a few $ at Digikey, and makes a reasonably good test mic.....google "DIY measurement mic"....
Pro audio testing is $$$$^2......
