start for a SSS ,help

Post by grtamp »

I would ask if anyone can help me to build a SSS, if someone has already made this amp and can give me information on the circuit.
I have a draft of an alleged scheme, but not verified!
Thanks

Post the schematic and I'm sure the more experienced guys here will tell you if it will fly.

Post it up!

Lets expand the catalog and add to the knowledge base of the community.

Luckily others have opened up the other sacred cows and have shared the bounty, ala 102, 124, 183, ...., ect.

Thanks to all who have shared!

There is all kinds of information about the SSS on TAG but the problem is I don't really think there is one way to build a SSS based on past discussion.

The amp was built for the player's needs; therefore, each is going to be different. I would also suspect that Alexander was also experimenting with different PI and power sections as well as step filters and use of inductors such as in the Model T super (Sunn).

I finally decided I really didn't need an amp like that and traded my chassis and plates for other stuff. Besides I have two Twin Reverbs to play with.

Yes, please post what you have. I think posting it is a win-win. You'll help some builders and some builders will undoubtedly help you.

Perhaps you could at first try to find some other guys (IMO: the more experience, knowledge, money etc. joins forces, the better) who are interested to participate in building a clone of a Dumble SSS in colaboration with you. IMO forums like this are a perfect platform to start a colaboration in real life, too.

AFAIK some professional builders offer/ed different versions of clones of the different versions of the originals and these "professional clones" sometimes are at display at amp shows etc.

So after you did find your colaborators you could perhaps visit some amp shows and try the professional clones and decide what kind of SSS-version and which professional clone of this version you like best for your playing style/s.

Now AFAIK most of these professional clones cost less than 10,000 $. So you and your colaborators could perhaps buy at least one of them together as an investment in such a colaboration in order to have at least one (or even more - depending on the number and the financial resources of the collaborators) "tone-model/s".

After you've bought one or more "tone-model/s", you might take all the information you find at Amp Garage and elsewhere (your own ears and technical knowledge IMO probabaly one of the most trustwothy sources) and start building your "tone-clones" of this/these "tone-model/s", but - as being the sportive guys you are - of course without opening this/these professional SSS clone/s to find out its/their circuit details and then to "paint by numbers".

Instead of this I would recommend to look upon this "tone-model" as some kind of black box:

Play it/them, listen to it/them and study the objective relationships between input signals and the according output signals and the correlations between the measurable objective output signals and their measurable subjective perception by the human hearing system (psychoacoustics) etc.

IMO aproaching the "tone-model" like some kind of "black box" with a known input and a known output perhaps will reward you with much more fun and personal satisfaction than opening the "black box" and "painting by numbers".

If you are very sportive and if you like adventures and you have a lot of trust in your ears and your technical knowledge in electronics and psychoacoustics you could perhaps even try to build an IC-version or even a software-version of a Dumble SSS.

After all the "personal clones" of all the colaborators (with tubes or transistors or software or whatever they'll think is best suited to achieve the tone of the "tone-model") have been built, the collaborators could sell again the "professional clone/s", and IMO probably without loosing too much of their investment in these "tone-model/s".

Have Fun!

These schematics have been floating around TAG for a while now. the first two are Rj's musing into the SSS. In this thread:

https://tubeamparchive.com/viewtopic.php?t=7972

People have made amps (longhorn) but are not open with the info. For now the SSS remains a mystery and seeing that no two are alike it will most likely remain so.

A buddy of mine's got a bludo hi plains drifter, and i know for a fact that it uses cathode followers after the PI.....just my input.

I'm not expert in SSS amp , but if you intend to run with 6550 power tubes with cathode driver configuration, I think your problem is the PT.

6550 run at least 500/600V and Heater current 1,6A for each tube!

If you add about 2A for the pre-amp circuit (including reverb) ,you need a PT with (1,6 x 4)+2=8.5A Heater wires , will be a big trafo!!! and at least 400-0-400V 500mA plate voltage , 0-120V for bias.

I don't know, but, take into consideration to begin to build one with 6L6GC.
