May I suggest you select a better shipping company than this one....

I'm a Canadian Recording Engineer. I've been living/working in Portugal for 9 years, now.

I shipped ALL my gear (recording console, mics, pre's, studio dynamic processing, studio monitors, guitars, amps AND a Piano) through a reputable shipper. They handled all of the paperwork associated with the legalities of import/export, customs and releasing the container. I had zero issues.

Important: When possible, pack your gear in the original packaging (with a few packs silica gel), first.

I would recommend putting each box into its own industrial garbage bag (as mentioned by Billy Z) and 'sucking the air out' with a Vacuum cleaner. I like to cut off the excess plastic. A good, tight wrap and the liberal use of packing tape are a must. Sensitive (read, 'expensive') gear, warrant a second 'bagging'.

Cheers,
Rob

You might want to look for a supplier of Grain-Pro polymer bags. Grain Pro is a polymer designed to allow moisture to pass only from inside the bag to outside. It is often used for shipping grains and green coffee in containers.

Say your stuff is in a container under the hot sun: If any condensation develops it will escape the bag but moisture from the environment will be kept out.

Not sure if this is exactly what you need but I thought it worth mentioning.

Good to know about the bags, gore-tex for "my stuff". I'm sort of intentionally scheduling this in winter to avoid having my stuff bake in a yard or on the boat. On the other hand my stuff might see the kind of seas that throw containers overboard like in those damn pics. Maybe if they didn't stack them so stupid high as to exceed the ship's stability, but where's the excess profit in that?

I think I have a reputable company recommended by a friend but I can't afford a door to door move so this is going be mostly DIY. I'm doing the stuffing while the truck waits, the shipper may be reputable, I'm worried about how reputable I am at stuffing it as I've no idea what I'm doing.

Nothing wrong with stacking containers that high, the key is to not run aground and crack open the hull of the ship.

OK, but who do I slip a Benjamin to to make sure mine is one of the ones towards bottom of the pile?

BTW the containers must lock together I'm guessing to make those stacks possible?

Is that the ship that was in the news recently?

I wonder how they would approach that situation?

The containers have all shifted over creating an unstable flotation.

If they get it ungrounded, wouldn't it capsize?

Think about how much $$$ that represents if the containers hold retail goods.

I wouldn't want to be Loyd's of London for that one!

Yes, that accident just happened several days ago in NZ, 6 miles out of "Bay of Plenty". Supposedly charts had to be checked by authorities before the Rena sailed showing a planned safe route around the well known reef.

A maritime hazard has been posted for the dozens of containers floating adrift.

Similar to the Exon Valdez and many others, human error or negligence is to blame.

rp I can understand your trepidation. A few years back I shipped an Airstream. It arrived perfect, dry, not a single dent, nothing missing, but I wet myself. Have you got a good shipping company to handle all the paper work at both ends? It is best to leave that part to those who know the ropes and understand the lingo.

The guitar on the airplane is tricky one. I've heard some insane stories and don't like to send them on the baggage belt to hell. The carry-on depends on the policy of the airline, the mood of the chief stewardess, your smile and how well dressed you are. Last year on a long-haul Lufthansa flight I handed the ES-295 to the stewardess and asked her to put it in the "wardrobe". It didn't fit, so it got it's own seat in business class.

As well as your wrapping gymnastics consider double boxing + packing chips to soften repeated jolts.
Best of luck, tony
