What speaker

Post by Tdale »

This has been discussed before, and I might go for EV speakers.

But what about wattage? A friend of min tried my clone on a Celestion Vintage30 2x12 cabinet, and liked the sound, but is 30W ok for a 50W amp?

But whould the speakers be 50W plus? And can speakers in paralell handle twice as many watts, ans one alone, just like resistors?

Do you guys like one or two speakers for your cabs?

30 watt 2x12 is fine. Parallel speakers add their wattage provided the impedance is the same.

I like 1x12 and 2x12 but no more. I really like the 2x12" that dogears brought to the ampfest awhile ago. It has Scumbags in it and sounds excellent, great lows and smooth singing highs with plenty of midrange punch. He likes the Celection G12-65 but I haven't tried them.

Right now I have....

1x12" closed back Eminence Red White and Blues. Excellent fat punchy tone, I like it a lot.

2x12" open back Celection G12H80 (no longer made). Also a lot of tone from this one. More in the upper mids than the RW&B but a very nice sounding cabinet.

1x15" EVM in a small closed back cab. I built this to play bass at jams but it sounds nice for guitar too. Much more high end than you'd expect from a 15, but plenty of bottom too.

2x12" Eminence Tonkers in a Peavey combo cabinet. Nice midrange punch but a high end fizzle that gets annoying after awhile.

1x12" Eminence Swamp Thang in a Crate combo cabinet. This cabinet sucks, I'm about ready to chuck it out and build a nice cab for this amp. The speaker has lots of nice mids and a kind of crunchy high end, a bit rough in a good way.

I've been slowly cutting clips of these cabinets and soon should put them together and post them.

Please verify this but I recall the Vintage 30 rated as 60W.

Yes. That's what I've used until I bought a G12-65 a month ago. I think the V30 isn't bad with a 6L6 Fenderish amp. I have an EV-15L which is a pita to haul around, but very smooth.
