Darin,
That is a very good looking build.

Re: Matchless Style build
That looks great! I'm building one right now, myself. I had a hot cat years back and it was my favorite amp ever.

Re: Matchless Style build
Fired her up with the limiter and everything was good
plugged in some tubes and had very decent tones right away.(had inputs wired wrong)
clean channel is nice clear and strat friendly (very Voxy)
gain channel has plenty of grind
controls are very sensitive and interactive in a good way
will be trying different tubes and making a few lead dress changes( bit of hum from V2 it is sensitive)
Some sort of channel switching would make this amp very versatile...I'm wondering if a relay would work for channel switching... or maybe some sort of simple A/B footswitch.need to figure out a mid boost switch also.
any suggestions or comments are appreciated
Thanks
Darin

Re: Matchless Style build
I changed the 270 ohms to 360
added a 82pf and .002 to the 3 way mid switch and it gives a little versatility
clean channel is really sweet...gain channel is monstrous
this thing is LOUD and runs hot!
thinking about callin it good and moving on...
I recommend this build if looking for something a little different...
great learning experience.
Thanks
Darin

Re: Matchless Style build
no bulbs this time Tom...although the Matchless Independence has some coolWhere are the light bulbs? Laughing
Nice clean build.
lighting for each channel (3) that would be a cool idea for the right faceplate
Thanks

Re: Matchless Style build
This amp should have a layout worked up to share with TAG.
Surprized no one has asked for info from you to do that.
I can't draw worth a crap in Visio.

Is the Hot Cat 30 and the Stray Kat 30 the same?

Hey Darin,
Maybe when you have a moment and after you have played this amp for a while, could you give a tone report or review of this amp?
It looks like a pretty cool amp, and looks like it would be a great rock and roll amp, with the added versatility of the master volume.
For example, does it seem like a bright amplifier?
What speakers are you using with it?
Thanks!

Re: Matchless Style build
Intriguing schematic, now I want to build one of these too.
Can anyone explain what's going on at the input? Grid leak bias with .01 & 5.1M and the cathode straight to ground but then what are the typical cathode bias 68K & 1m resistors doing? Strange to see a grid leak set up on a modern amp. I think it sounds great on my 5C1 and am planning to try other primitive tweed builds.
Any thoughts about splitting the cathode resistors on the power tubes? I remember reading something hifi, maybe concerning the Dynaco, ST35, that a shared resistor, even for all 4 tubes, sounded better. But it's a vague memory and it might only apply to hifi.
