Joe Walsh used to take a cheap folding chair and set his speaker or combo on it.
He said it was to decouple the cab from the floor.
It's just a matter of taste and need.
As in, if the sound guy always tells you to turn down you will have to keep the peace.
I knew a sound guy that the first second somebody gave him grief he would flick the slider all the way down, taking the guy out of the mix.
So sometimes a stand is necessary.
Turn it sideways and aim it at your head.
I always liked to have a mic on it and just use the speaker for a monitor.
