Dumble fender mods for ab763 Bandmaster

Post by boldaslove6789 »

Does anyone have any layouts or schematics of the mods Dumble did to the ab763 Bandmaster?

I'm doing the ab763 boost mod on schematic Heaven to my bandmaster's normal channel. I'm adding the 100kB Mid pot to the back of the chassis. Wondering if there's anything else I could do to spice it up.

I did a few mod amps like that with not great results. Since then I've moved on to the UltraPheonix and Dumble Hotel Hog mods. The layout above doesn't make a huge change in the tone.

If you utilize the Rock/Jazz switch and use the BM stack in most ab763 fenders it sounds great.

I did a Bassman 100 and did a Bluesmaster stack on one side, skyliner on the other, footswitchable boost on each channel, got rid of the NFB in the pwr amp (ala Marshall Plexi), and added a Dumbleator w/ Master Vol by adding an extra node on the pwr supply and it was a very unique amp that just sang huge oboe notes...

Can you elaborate a bit more on the UltraPhoenix and Hotel Hog mods? Since you moved on to these, could you share a bit information?

Cheers,

Another, maybe easier, way to do the boost is to run a 220k resistor from the #1 lug of the mid pot to ground and run a wire from the same lug to the switch. In the normally closed position the other lug on the switch is grounded. You can hang the resistor anywhere along the line that's convenient. The switch to the ground on one of the input jacks is handy.

If you don't have to really fine-tune the mid pot, just replace it with a 250ka and hang a 6k8 resistor to ground so that in the 0 position it is set midway on the normal sweep (like a deluxe reverb) and anything above that reduces the tone stack in the circuit to taste. sh

I just had an ab763 Twin modified with that stack and I think it's a definite change from the original tone. It is definitely more Fender-y than the Skyline stack, but it's pretty different too. It's got the Classic-era tone to my ears, kind of bright, much more of a Vito tone/texture ('Like a Rock', 'On the Day') than Ford tone/texture. Seems to be pretty similar to the stack from the Low Plate Classic 124 posted in the Files section. FWIW, I really think it sounds great. It is just the clean side, so in order to get some grind out of it you'll need to engage the PAB. Clean sounds nice though. I'm a Strat player and play a lot of slide, looking more for that raw type of texture.

I've heard the Hotel Hog term thrown around a little bit but I don't think I have ever heard what it consists of.

It would be great to have one place on this forum where most if not all the mods could be listed along with what they do

For instance, don't all the Phoenix mods pertain to using a Fender blackface amp as a foundation?

Personally, I don't know why you wouldn't put the Bluesmaster tone stack in a Fender amp.

It's the best tone stack never Fender made. It covers a lot of classic fenders sounds. I can get Brown face tones from the Bluesmaster as well as mock Black face tone (I own a Brown face, and I'm more familar with those tones.)
