Layout Help

Post by C Moore »

The donor amp is a Crate V-18.
The circuit is a Marshall 18.
I was hoping to utilize as much of the Crate layout as possible......does anything look like I am trying to get away with murder.? Anything that looks like it will never work.?
I made the amp fixed/adjustable bias.....I hope.
I am not too concerned about lead length.....I can always shorten up.
My main concern is the way things have fallen into place. Do you guys think I can have a reasonably quiet amp that functions properly.? Or do you think I need to move some components to more typical locations.?
Thank You

I'm at the tail end of a similar build. I have read more than once that the original combo layout can be noisy and prone to oscillations. Thus, I laid mine out differently and in a way that was more conducive to a head style lead run.

I guess you aren't finished running all the leads as I see that the speed and intensity controls aren't grounded. Also, you have part of your trem oscillator circuit crossing over the PI inputs, this might be problem. The only way to know for sure is to see how it's performs.

Have you tried it, yet? If not, turn it on and see what you think. I've seen really messy builds that have been dead quiet at idle before.

Overall, yours looks reasonable to me.

No.....I have not powered up. I have not even soldered yet. I just kind of have the lead dress tacked in place, so some of the gurus could see what I have.
I re-used every hole from the Crate layout that I could.....like the can cap......not where I would have located that on a blank chassis.....but the Crate chassis had a hole that sufficed, so I used it. I am not trying to be an idiot about this.....just trying to make do (if possible) with the neighborhood that the V-18 gave me.
I was just wondering, from a quick look, if any of you guys see something(s) that you think is a real bad idea. Just wondering if the Crate chassis left me with any fundamental problems.
Like I say....I reached a point, especially in the power supply and bias supply, where I wanted to get an opinion.......to see if I have done something so fundamentally wrong that I need to drill a hole(s) and relocate something to "higher ground".......?
Thanks

get it going and see what you think of the cap-can. I think they can be quite noisy because of the dumb grounding inside the can, unless you are using all the caps in the cap in parallel as a single supply node filter. But it is possible to fluke a quiet amp with them now and again.

10-4.....
As soon as I can, I will get this squared up and report back. Maybe it will all work out pretty well......but I doubt it..... not typical of my luck..... :(
Thank You
