Liverpool output question Stancor 3851 w/4400K impedence.

Post by loctal »

I am starting the wiring for my first Liverpool. The amp is being built from parts that I have on hand including the output transformer. I would like to use an old Stancor 3851 transformer that I found in my junk drawer.

The amp will only have two EL84s and the transformer has a primary impedence of 4400K. I intend to hook up an 8 ohm speaker to the 4 ohm tap of the output transformer so that the power tubes see an 8800K primary load.

The negative feedback on a Liverpool is normally connected to the 8 ohm leg of the output.

My question: since I am using the 4 ohm leg as an 8 ohm load, should I connect the negative feedback to the 4 ohm tap on the output transformer?

Thanks for you help and comments.

So, originally the impedance ratio was 5200:8, and you are going to run 8800:8, or 8800/5200=1.69 times higher. The voltage ratio will be (1/1.69)^0.5, or 0.769. Use the 4-ohm tap and reduce the 100k FB resistor by that factor, or use the 8-ohm tap, which will be very close to the same thing.
