Walnut 1x12 Cab with Grill Cloth from AES
Has anyone used these to cover a 12" speaker cab before? I built a 1x12 walnut cabinet and want to cover the speaker so curious to get comments, walnut is dark and these are light colored:
radio cloth
Grill Cloth - 12" x 12", Philco Diamond Pattern, Cotton, Gold
(Wonder if this may be too thick)
speaker cloth
Grill Cloth - Basket Weave, Natural, 42' Width

I think you can get free samples from AES.
Then you could compare the color of the cloth to the wood.

I think that basket weave would look nice on the walnut.
Plus, you can always stain a natural basket weave to just about any color you want.

The radio cloth looks fun. But I worry in a large format 20"x17" the diamond pattern will be too busy in addition to the thickness of the cloth.
I can get a sample, then wait for shipping again. I was hoping someone would have experience with these.

I seem to remember that the basket weave can change the tone of the speaker.
I could be wrong which is common but I seem to remember somebody saying that the basket weave was used on the Marshall 412 to kill a little bit of the harsh high end which is common for a quad of Vintage 30's.
Anybody heard that before?

Mark, those look nice. It turns out google is once again a friend. Philco has a gallery and these two look like they have the diamond pattern grill cloth, looks nice. I may go with that seeing it on an actual unit with wood:

That cloth does look good.
Can't wait to see your cab once finished.
Oxblood with gold thread would also look great.
Lopoline also sells a variety of grill cloth.

Tom thanks. That wheatcloth looks like a contender. Here's some photos where it stands now:
Scumback m75 3/4" thick solid walnut for everthing but the baffle. I fingerjointed all the main pieces after building a jig. Matched the grain as best as possible from one 13"x8' board. 3/4walnut support framing on front and back to attach backer and baffleboards. I liked the three panel backer so I did that too (one on the table next to the cab to show the scummy blue). Stainless steel screws, knife thread inserts, blah blah blah.
~$115 total for everything including screws and washers. three nights of spare time. Still needs final sanding, grill cloth and finishing but it sounds really really good!

Re: Walnut 1x12 Cab with Grill Cloth from AES
I dunno if this will help at all, but here's an amp I built with the natural basketweave from AES:
http://i54.tinypic.com/166wap.jpg
The owner purchased the amp with a different front panel that has a "less opaque" black grill cloth. He asked for a custom front panel with this color combination and has been very happy. He hasn't mentioned any change in tone as a result of the grill cloth change. It's got an Eminence Copperhead (10") behind it.

Re: Walnut 1x12 Cab with Grill Cloth from AES
Tom, I have also heard that about the basketweave. And also the Bluesbreaker cloth, tightly woven.
I have a basketweave slant 4x12 with four Delta Pro 12A in it. That's a dark combination. Sounds good to me, but then my hearing is not good in the high end any more. I figure that's what tone controls are for.
I got the basketweave because it looks good against red tolex and it's fairly tough too. Jim Marshall was always more marketing than technical and I would bet that's why he liked it, because it looks good and doesn't rip all that easily. Plus it would cut those vintage 30s down to size too.
