Original Trainwreck Cab Construction

Post by cjp54 »

I've been looking at as many TW cabs I can find on this site as well as the original TW site and have a couple questions. There aren't enough side and top photos to come to an absolute conclusion of construction..at least for me. It appears that there's a front picture frame trim to the front of the cabs hiding the dado joint of the main body being dadoed into each other as shown on the Ron Worley Nov 13, 2008 drawing. However, what's going on from the back side? If the orignal cabs were made like Ron's drawing I would expect to see the 1/4" dado coming through the back... but I don't. So, is there a picture frame on the back side also or am I just missing the dado joint? I'll be making my own cab soon and am not sure just how I will construct it quite yet. Should I try to get it as close to the original construction or just go my own direction??? I don't expect an answer to this question, it's something I need to answer myself. Since the insides are not going to be TW correct I may just go my own direction.
Thanks for any info!

TW cabs were made with a 1/4" relief cut at the back to hide the dado joint. No additional frame was used on the back.

The other correct way to make the exotic wood cabinets is a 45 degree angle cut around the corners this cut goes front to back.

Here are a couple of Ron's drawings from the TW Files section.

I started out to make the dato on my first cab.I didn"t have a router table so I tried a 45 degree miter and it worked well.I used biscuits on these corners and Im happy. No adding on a strip after its done.I just found this was easier at the end of the day and looks clean,Mikey

Thanks Brother,The top one has a good amount of flame and is for my rocket. The bottom is curley cherry and will be for the liverpool that I havent started yet.I just found that the 45 is an easey way to make the corners attach. And looks decent. Thanks Mikey
