stranded wire...keep going or start over

Post by wsaraceni »

my trainwreck build is about 4 years into it. i originally built it with teflon coated wire but it was a mess and i wanted to neaten it up. i thought i read somewhere that stranded wire was used so thats what i used on this build.

all that i have left is to wire the board to potentiometers and some grounding.

should i keep going or remove the stranded for solid wire?

Personally, I would just replace the wire that you are re-dressing. I seem to be able to make the solid core wire stay in place better than the stranded. I would think that lead dress would make more difference than the actual wire.

Not to hijack your thread, but it is sort of on the same subject. Do any of you guys use super glue or other means to keep your wiring in place?

I vote to keep the stranded wire. it is more durable in the long run.

The wire type should not make as much difference as the the workmanship involved. The solid will only really benefit when trying to make 90 degree bends that look like an L rather than a C. If you have really nice strippers and dont score the wire the solid can be easier to work with but you will not want to bend it around too much or it can break. Ever took a paperclip and bent it back and forth until it gets warm then breaks! Same theory. Stranded just keeps bending.
Godd luck with your build and dont hesitate to ask more questions!

Maybe post some pics of your amp so we may address other concerns as well.

Glen K. (geetarpicker) has done the superglue thing with his (real) '89 Express.

Good thread I have my Liverpool I stole the PT from so I want to replace that missing PT with a Pacific iron and rewire the amp while I am at it too.

I am sure I have low quality 20ga solid in it right now and was thinking about swithing to 20ga topcoat or 22ga topcoat.

No worries. I've been using Kimber wire lately with great results. Angela's got it for a pretty decent price at .90 a foot. I know it sounds expensive, but dang if it ain't good stuff. I just consider it part of the price I pass on to the build expense. :-)

I work in medical products. Various Loctite products like Black Max, are used to tack down wires...usually very thin ones. I'm not a big fan of the double-sided-sticky-tape nylon tie downs. The adhesive often fails after a few years. A well built amp is for decades.

I have seen mention of rerouting the wire that goes beneath the 25watt resistor on the PS bd to under the board because that resistor can get fairly hot. I built mine with that in mind so I cant say whether it will be a problem or not. Maybe some one else can advise!

Looks really good so far by the way
