OT Impedance for 6V6 Herzog: 5k or 8k?

Post by The New Steve H »

I've been searching for an answer to this question, and I haven't found one.

I'm building a Herzog clone, which is similar to a Champ. The OT has two impedance choices: 5k and 8k. I'm using a 6V6 output tube. The amp is set up so it can play through a 10 ohm resistor (as an effect) or through 4 or 8 ohm speakers.

I do not know which output impedance to choose. Any clues? Some unknown person on a forum claims 8K is standard for a 6V6.

Yeah around 6K-8K is what is usually paired with a duo of 6V6.

But, the rules regarding that is a matter of taste as well.
One way will give more headroom while the other way will sound a bit more congested.

Don't let that smoke out!

You have 5K and 8K primaries AND 4 and 8 ohm secondaries?

Check out the schematic for the OT.

This is a single ended amp with a single 6V6. Use the 5K.

So in other words, not the one I already wired up because I thought I had the right answer.

Well, at least I didn't cut the other wire short and cap it off.

I built my 5C1 with a 5K (Edcor) it sounds great. I built my 5F1 with an 8K (Allen) it sounds great. How's that?

Yeah, I would have said 8K, too. Tweed Champs run between 8K and 10K and Kevin O'Connor shows 8K7 in his Herzog design from TUT 3. Higher level of harmonic distortion I believe, probably good for a "pedal."

The 5f1 w/ the Allen 8k is something special. I intend to build another this time as a hifi chassis type head like my 5c1 and will use the 8k again.

The 5f1 on 10 is a pedal

I thought this thing would fit in a small chassis because it's so similar to a Champ, but the extra doodads are starting to pile up in there.

One nice thing about this project is that after I'm done, I can create the world's first usable Herzog schematic.

I learned something new and amazing today. The little + and - things on electrolytic capacitors actually mean something important.

Thanks for sharing that, Steve. It's all good fun - and useful too.

Watch out for the pointy end of the soldering iron. It may get hot!

Be well.

Yes, it's a major discovery. I'm considering writing a paper.
