I've been trying to trace down the source of noise in my house and I think I found it the other day: A doorbell transformer.leaveitalone84 wrote:I haven't been able to try that, but If I have an amp plugged into the wall, I can tell when my fridge/computer/dishwasher is on and also my neighbors fridge and computers as well. I live in an older house turned apartment. I tried the DIY AC filtering before from the Magnan site and it definitely helps.Structo wrote:Any of you guys with scopes ever anylize the house current to see what kind of EMI is on the line and what is generated by various items in your household?

Re: Any Home Made Line Conditioners?
From my Ham days I recall that was a frequent culprit. Neighbors would complain and I'd have to go trouble shoot their house and find out what was wrong at their end otherwise it was MY fault. Anyway, another very often overlooked noisy SOB is those touch on touch off lamps. They put out HUGE amounts of line noise all the time.

+1 those lamps are noisy. Plus I've had quite a few of them burn up while in operation.skyboltone wrote:From my Ham days I recall that was a frequent culprit. I've just come to the point now that when I record I unplug all unnecessary things. I found these cool little power plug switches a few years ago. They work great at completely disconnecting something from the wall without actually unplugging it.

you may want to try the old "plug-a-5-henry-choke-in the-adjacent-inlet-trick"

Yup. A Hammond 193L Filter Choke. Thats the one most audiophiles use and is closest to the product that the previous Patents Inventor/Distributor uses in his stupid expensive power conditioners.Analog Assassin wrote:Like an amp choke?Tubetwang wrote:you may want to try the old "plug-a-5-henry-choke-in the-adjacent-inlet-trick"
Just wire it to a 3 prong plug with the ground going to the chokes mounting holes or the chasis it is mounted in. Plug it into the adjacent wall outlet or powerstrip of the equipment you want. You can even wire some outlets after the choke in parallel. Implementing MOV's or other X and Y Caps if you'd like as well.

Just picked up a Furman AR-1220 off Ebay for 150 buck's, it's got a few issue's but for the price it was a deal, when you gig in a lot of different club's you'll find the voltage will vary in the house by quite a wide range and that will make your rig sound very different from night to night,
if you can build or buy a voltage regulator and conditioner you'll be doin yourself and your rig a big favor !

But you could setup a Filtered w/choke power strip with medical grade outlets, fuse, and master switch for under $100. Which that would be better than most off the shelf conditioners up to $300 atleast. You won't have Voltage Regulation but it'll be pretty damn good.
Awsome deal though!

Re: Any Home Made Line Conditioners?
I know I'm dragging up an old subject, but I was curious about this again, found this post, and how do you not blow a fuse plugging a choke into the wall? Seems it would short out. Excuse my ignorance if this is a silly question. Because otherwise, this is a much cheaper alternative to a Furman.

Where'd you get those nice tag strips?
Re: Any Home Made Line Conditioners?
I'm using 2 types of conditioners in my home stereo. Neither are homemade, but both are easily built DIY.
One is simply a large choke across the line.

The 400.
In my other system I'm using a balanced line transformer.
