To the OP: you need to know what you want before you have a build made. A Plexi with 6V6s at 370-400V will still be plenty loud.

This will get around 23 watts & the switches allow some versatile tone options. The paralleled V1 adds about 30% gain with no increase in noise.

theres also a 6cm6 ... its a 6aq5 in a 9 pin envelope

from there your into 7 pin tv and radio types, but theres several 7 pin beam tubes

the plate v becomes quite low and so does the driving voltage
its the size of the envelope that limits the heat dissipation

theres a 6cz5 its a 9 pin that'll take 350v but has 10w dissipation

Id try a deluxe opt, and a blues jr or princeton/champ pt... only rated to 70ma

even a low watt rig can be damn loud with an efficient speaker

Good Point. A 22 Watt amp would be perfect for my needs. I do not like a compressed tone ala' an 18 Watt/ EL-84 based amp. I prefer the more open Plexi sound.

IMHO, Get a proper built "50" watt plexi, built with proper transformers and tubes with Power Scaling.

If you are here in North America, check out youtube for these North American manufacturers who have an amp similar to this:

www.soultoneamps.com

www.suhrguitars.com

The badger is offered in 18 and 30 watts, check out Pete Thorn's vid of the badger......

www.reinhardtamps.com

or Rockytop amps

www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lg6m0n115Ms

or any of the pro builders here who use Power Scaling or VVR.

"Proper" amp and trannies? :?

The Badger 30 looks like a very nice amp for $2345. Looks to be an EL34 version of an 18watt. (per Suhr website)

I think this Texas Raptor I scratch built came in complete under $600 including cab and speaker using Hammond trannies.

I think they are numerous ways to go to get a great sounding Plexi-ish amp that is in that 25-30watt range. There have been quite a few good suggestions made that are worth considering that might meet that need.

Guitar was built by my son who is a much better luthier & wood worker than I am.

Both are very nice your son is a woodworker to be proud of but I have seen several of your amps and I think he takes after his father.

el34 low volt plexi

Post by cxx »

Sorry to revive this thread but I was just what I was looking for.

I built a plexi clone on the remains of a crate vc3112. Used the 68 plexi schematic with the crate hardware and transformers. These were the Chicago transformers that were from magnetic components. The 4k output transformer seemed a reasonable match to the 2 el34s. The power transformer provided about 340 volts on the plates. I just modified the dropping resistors to maintain enough voltage on the preamp and phase inverter.

I tried it with 6v6, 6l6 and the el34. The el34s really sound best in this circuit, especially when played on the clean side. I've tried the JJ 6v6's in the full scale plexi but really preferred the el34s in that one also.
