Trainwreck Cabinets

Post by selloutrr »

I was taking to my wife's uncle's wife's neice's husband.. (Friend) today who has a back ground in Engineering and Architecture who makes cabinets and wood works in his spare time.
We started talking TW and cabinets next thing we knew we were both on board to start making cabinets. I looks like we will start our trial runs next weekend. We are aiming for Original TW spec cabinets. Starting with early style pre exotic woods. The exciting part is I'm anal as all hell and have access to several original TW to clone from. But it gets better.. He used to do Pyrograph as a kid... (brain storm) I'm going to get him to also make one off authentic faceplates.

To test the water...
I'm wondering who else would be interested in a cab with an authentic faceplate? I'll have a better idea of price, depending on material costs and labor. We are hoping to keep the price under $400 each (plain cherry cab +faceplate). Keep in mind it takes time to do things correct and PERFECT! This will be the closest to original you can get or I wont offer them. Ultimately this is for my Parts correct build so if it's not A+++ it wont happen.

I'll keep you all posted as things develope.
Yes I will post pics as we go.

Isn't this just a more cryptic way of saying "I was talking to myself"? If it isn't you, I guess you have that in common (being a husband of your wife's uncle's niece).
Anyways, that seems like it would be a neat project. Looking forward to seeing the pics!

He didn't seem as removed until I started doing the math as to how we are related. Easier to just say family. I'm excited too. I'm also heading up to Washington State in a 10 days. The northwest is full of hippie and wood workers. I'm planning on finding a pyrograph artist to draw up a few designs.

Keep me in mind for a Liverpool cab/faceplate, same thing anyway as the Express faceplate.

WOAH!! Your math is a bit off. If you used your calculations first cousins and sisters would be legal. Last I checked that was only ok for the royal family.

I drew you up a tree so no one would be confused.

AMP - don't be scared we have no interest in competeing with your cabinets. Our goal is do a small run of spot on authentic TW cabs.

It would sure be easier if it was just me but after trying to cut my thumb off in wood shop when I was 13 I find it's better to leave the table saw to someone else.

Hahaha, loved the family schematic. Now all we need is a layout and some voltages.

Spent today working on mocking up a cabinet.

We decided to build a cabinet out of scrap wood to get a feel for how it will go before we cut into the nice wood. It gave us a chance to make mistakes and learn from them, set angles, and get a general feel for how it all breaks down and take notes, buy extra tools, and get a feel for how some of the new tools feel powered up in the hand.

The mock cab is currently glued resting in braces drying over night.

Today I ordered 40 linear feet of Hardwood American Cherry along with 30ft of 1/8" faceplate stock, from a local cabinet shop it should be here in a couple days. Hopefully before I take off to Seattle on Saturday for a week.

Will's pyrograph skills are impressive. He practiced over the weekend and showed up at my house with a burn of a palm tree. We spent a few hours brain storming animals and designs that would fit the authentic style of KF TW cabinets and a few fun ideas.

Any suggestions for images?

A classic ribbon mic or a tube would be cool! An acoustic would be cool as well. For authentic Ken, maybe a bear? Can't fuck with bears..

I've been working out a Polar bear cab.
Quarter Sawn White Oak I want to white wash it to give it a white ghosting finish.

Graphics pyrographed similar to one of these with an arctic background.

Can I assume you are thinking about an RCA 44 as a classic ribbon Mic?

Which type of tube? on it's side? up? angled?

I've been looking at different Acoustic guitars I'm not sure how well the detail of the strings would so up. an brand of model? of any basic martin, taylor, guild will do? with or without a pick guard?

bear... head, face, full body,type?
I found some great wood in a book today for a brown bear and black bear.
