SE Rocket

Post by andrew »

I am building a SE amp with the first two preamp tubes and their components for a Rocket. The power section is from the Jones Amp 3 Tube SE Wreck using one 6v6. The Rocket layout has the signal going from the center of the treble control to a 220k then a .047 before it hits pin#7 of the PI (which I won't be using). Should there be anything between the treble pot and the 2k2 that is attached to pin# 5 of the 6v6? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Are you running cathode bias?

Hello! Off of pin#8 on the 6v6 there is a 22uf/ 470ohm going to ground. The Jones Amp schematic is on the SOPHT AMPS .com website . He designed the Derailment from the Jones Amp. Thanks for the FAST HELP! Andrew In Alabama your logos' name is "Ready Kilowatt" for Alabama Power Co.

Hi Andrew,

here is what should be done:

0.047uF (from the treble pot) -> 470k to ground -> 2.2k to pin 6 of the 6v6

That's it! You can also add a 1M audio pot between the 0.047uF and the 470k for a master volume.

BTW, I didn't design the Derailment, I simply build one with a few mods.

Cheers,
Stephane.

Thanks Stephane! Another question if I may, I am using a Hammond SE 270cax with 250-0-250 70ma. Would I need to adjust the power supply if I went up to a Hammond TF-22723 325-0-325 180ma. ?

Hi Andrew,

yes, you would need to adjust at least the preamp b+. Which power supply are you going to use for your SE Rocket?

You are going to use a 6V6? If you are going to use a 6V6, that power supply might be to big for it. A 6V6 has a max voltage of 350V. A 325-0-325 power supply will put out about 450V once rectified! The 250-0-250 transformer is dead on for a 6V6 (about 350V rectified). I say stay with the 270CAX if you are going to use a 6V6.

Cheers,
Stephane.

Yes sir!

My first DIY guitar amp was a champ (5E1) using iron from A.E.S. I ended up using a big WW resistor to drop the B+. I wouldn't go higher than 300 VDC on the 6V6. I say this because I tried a Big Muff with the amp and fried the 6V6 by turning the level (on the Big Muff) up too high. I have since limited the max output level of the Big Muff.

I've been thinking of building a SE or PP amp with 6N1Ps.

How about OT transformers? I'm using a Hammond 125CSE single ended 8watt with my 270CAX. Would a 15 watt sound "better" ? Also, is it possible simulate the sound of the heavy driven PI in a SE amp? I am using the Rocket preamp layout using half of the first tube then the full second tube then the power section of the Adams Amp. Pin#1 of the half tube to B+4 --Pin#6 of the full tube to B+3 -- Pin 4 6v6 1k2w to B+2 --- OT trans to B+1 Thanks for all the help guys! Andrew
