So, it sounds like the VVR is working correctly. Now the questions is whether it is tied into your amp correctly.
Can you show us a schematic fragment of how the VVR sits in your amp circuit?

Re: Installing VVR on Lightning clone
If you refer back to the layout diagram in my first post in this thread (sorry no schematic available), I have inserted the VVR after the first filter cap between that and the OT. The rectifier tube pin 8 is going to that first filter cap and from there to VVR B plus in and from VVR B plus out to the OT.sliberty wrote:So, it sounds like the VVR is working correctly. I wasn't initially 100% sure this is where the VVR should go so I asked and several kind folks from here assured me this is the place to put in when scaling the whole amp which is what I did.
Thanks!
Re: Installing VVR on Lightning clone
There are 3 wires on the filter cap to the far left. One goes to the OT center tap. One goes to the choke. And one goes to the rectifier.
Which wires did you move to the output side of the VVR? I am guessing you only moved the OT center tap.
I believe it should be BOTH the OT center tap AND the choke that get relocated to after the VVR.

Both of you are correct, I only moved the OT center tap, the choke is still before the VVR so let me move that over and see what happens. I was wondering about the choke.
Thanks so much! I'll let you know how it goes after I move the choke after the VVR.

Re: Installing VVR on Lightning clone
The choke is actually the beginning of the remainder of your power supply string. As is, you are not scaling the rest of the power supply. It will surely make a difference once you are scaling everything properly.

The VVR is working now and this thing is great! Now with the VVR I can turn it all the way down to silence with the front panel knobs turned all the way up.
Kudos to Dana at Hall Amps for the VVR and to sliberty and all of you that have helped me figure this thing out (and for putting up with my questions and not making me feel stupid)!
The Amp Garage is a great resource!
Thanks!
