I put a humdinger (500 ohm pot) between the heater leads on my 5f6a clone, and it reduced the hum dramatically. This has me wondering: why not put one between the 5V heater leads on the rectifier? AC is AC, right? Someone tell me why this idea is crazy.
I also have a 125V neon power light, and I know from experience that they make noise. Would the same approach work, with a much larger pot?

Humdinger on Rectifier?
Relax. It's SUPPOSED to smoke a little.

Re: Humdinger on Rectifier?
While I'm asking brilliant questions, can someone tell me which type of tube socket is best? I recall Merlin Blencowe recommending one type over the others, but I can't find it in his books. Something about lower noise.

Re: Humdinger on Rectifier?
The problem with the rectifier tube filament circuit is that it doesn't just have 5VAC on it; it also has the whole B+ on it. You do not want to ground that through a humdinger!
Don't know what Merlin likes for sockets, but I'm liking the Beltons. Decent and plentiful.

Now that you point that B+ thing out, I feel fairly stupid, but at least I didn't hook it up!
I guess I'll go with the Beltons. They worked fine on the Bassman. Thanks.
