Build 124?

Post by jaysg »

Has anyone built up an amp with the 124 values? If so, what did you think? It's probably the most accurate schematic of any ODS in this public domain.

Normster built one I think. Check in with him.

Well, sort of. I built a tube rectified 6V6 with #124 preamp values. Very good sounding amp with lots of tonal variation. Nice crunchy breakup and cleans up well with guitar volume rolled back.

Trannys are Trainwreck iron from Moose. (Don't ask. )

As far as I'm concerned, ALL Dumbles are Strat friendly.
But seriously, I love the sound of a nice Strat through a Dumble style amp. I know that a lot of people strive for the Robben Ford Jing Chi tone, but the Dumble is a killer blues machine with a Strat and the OD set on 9-10 o'clock.

I changed my 50w Hybrid-A to #124 values and removed the reverb as well. The amp sounds great!

My PAB is very subtle, however the mid boost is over the top! Like both positions of the Deep switch.

I would say that is not as refined as the Hybrid-A with Scott's tweaks(more fendery) but it is still very nice! I like the OD channel in this circuit better then "MY" version of the Hybrid-A. It can be very aggressive!

To risk being innaccurate or offensive, to me, Scott is sort of a Steely Dan guitarist like a Carlton or that approach. I'm not that capable, nor really into that sound/toneset. I'm looking for a ruder Dumble. Time to crack out the solder sucker...

Just to clarify....Scotts tweaks to Hybrid-A do not make it sound "more fendery" I was refering to the #124 values.

Scott's tweaks are spot on for the Hybrid-A circuit. As a matter of fact, his reputation speaks for itself. 8)

If you can wait before cracking the Soldering iron a few days I will try to post a youtube clip of my amp. Nothing fancy just some basic sounds you can expect from the circuit. Nuthin fancy because I have been spending too much time soldering and not enough time practicing.

Guys remember that the OT on #124 is slightly different from what is current out there.

The OT looks like it is 1300CT, whereas those replacements out there are 2000CT.

I'm not quite sure what the mismatch does to the tone. Maybe that's why the circuit is so different.

Anybody care to comment?
