What's your favorite tolex cleaner?

Post by Zippy »

I have a '60s blackface Champ that I would like to clean up for sale. What's a great cleaner that won't damage the tolex or leave a residue?

I have already upgraded the speaker (Kendrick) and changed out the cap can. It's a cool lil' example of a great amp. I'm selling it because I am replacing it with a RJ Guitars Supre build.

Thanks,

George

Armor All wipes. I've heard that an earlier formulation would cause cracking, but I've never seen it happen, and I've been wiping-down vintage Fender and Marshall cases and cabs with it for several years.

I tried numerous cleaners including armor all. Never tried Simple Green which is supposed to be good. The only one that work for me was Murphy's Oil Soap. I used it at about 10x the recommended strength.
If it says "Vintage" on it, -it isn't.

I would have that girl clean my amps. She might be filthier than they are...one would hope

White wall cleaner, degreaser, peanut butter (seriously, but go very light).

I use an automotive vinyl/leather cleaner by Meguire's. I use it on all my home furnishings and amps. It cleans, protects, and smells really nice.

The only drawback...well two I guess, is that's it's a bit shiny at first, and it's literally squeeky clean. When I get up or sit down on my leather or vinyl chairs, it makes a squeeky fart sound. But I guess that won't matter much for amps.

Armor All is of the Devil for what was mentioned before. I don't care if they fixed their formula, they burned too many people for too many years.

I used to do car shows, won many trophy, so I got to play with many types of cleaners from all over the world. IMHO, the Meguires is some of the best (easy to get, inexpensive) stuff out there. I use their stuff all over the house. And it usually smells the best too!

Peanut butter first (not crunchy... Ouch!), then the de-greaser afterward.

The maid doesn't have nearly enough peanut butter on her.
