Paul Ruby Express.

Post by bassman333 »

Can anyone tell me a little about these? Are they faithful to the original?

How much do these usually sell for new from Ruby himself? Does he still make them?

Here is the one I am looking at.

No - especially the power supply and master volume.

They were pretty highly regarded (by those that weren't pissed about him making TW type amps).

I don't know how the seller got away with listing it with the full trainwreck moniker. As soon as the trainwreck police see it it will be pulled. Better jump quick.

I would say more like TW inspired than clone, Looks like he used metal film resistors. Thats a big no no IMHO. Still it is a good looking build with a nice cab. Just not a true to the bone clone.

Paul is a masterful builder, and fromthe looks of this one, it is typical high quality Paul work. As mentioned, the power supply looks like it is a variation (combination of a cap can and some discrete caps on the board instead of a bundle of Mallory caps), most likely for easier maintenance and quieter operation. Paul has helped many here to quite down their noisy amps. The transformer positioning is different, also possibly for noise reasons, or perhaps just for better balance when carrying the amp. And there appears to be a MV as well. Personally, I'd rather have a VVR, and if I bought this amp, would probably convert to one. Bob's cabinets ae also top notch by the way.

Man,I hope they take it off,Im looking at it to much! That is a reasonable price too.If I could buy it I would.I looked up the Bio on the cab builder and was a good read. That cab is a Ten.Maybe the Tw cops know and respect Paul Ruby and wont bother this sale,Just a thought,Mikey

I am the buyer of the Paul Ruby Express, will report on it.
I may actually have Gregg Levy listen to it and help me tube it.

That should be a great amp to work with are you going to go with NOS tubes or does it have a good set already? I never did look at it on ebay.

When speaking with Gregg (he has owned over a dozen TW's) he asked "which Express?" they were all different.

Bob,

This is where the group could really get some great information if Gregg knows what the differences were between all those Express amps.

This was expected by all since many different transformers were used throughout and Ken used what he had on hand in components, etc.
