I just made an eyelet board for the 4 big filter caps on my Bassman clone.
Question: is there any reason why I can't attach this thing with the capacitors facing the chassis? I have 1" standoffs, which would enable me to turn the caps to the chassis and leave plenty of space. It's a better fit than having the caps face out, and it will make it harder to stick my finger in there and get roasted.
I know Fender used a pan to cover the caps, but I'm not going to sue myself if I get shocked, and I'm not planning to fondle the caps anyway, so I don't have much interest in making a pan.
It won't make cap jobs any harder, since I'll have to take 4 screws out either way.

Relax. It's SUPPOSED to smoke a little.

I don't get what you mean by "the capacitors facing the chassis"..

you could if they under the standoffs.
i'd be worried about airflow depending on where exactly the caps were.
the fender can was usually pretty far from the power tubes.

as long as they dont short out against each other or the chassis you can mount them anyway you want. no harm. airflow isn't an issue since the fender style can cover had no ventilation. I would consider putting a blank piece of board over the board with eyelets just for safety.

yes it's fine

Exposed high voltage is never advisable.
If the inverted board will be covered by a plain fibre or other insulating material that would protect from contact with the eyelets.
There's still access from the sides (if I understand your intent correctly) that should be prevented.
Cap cover 'pans' are readily available from a number of sources, but if fabrication is your game a guard can be made from any material.
Just make sure that if it's a conductive material it's not able to easily make contact with the HV, which was the intent of Leo's original design.
Safety first

That clever CAD-looking picture is what I had in mind. Thanks.

Just cause Leo used a pan doesn't mean you have too. You've probably punched your chassis already but I've always found Marshall style dual cans the best solution to free up space inside the amp. Or I mount these inside usually over the PT.
