Trainwreck Cabinets

Post by Big Jim »

Hey folks,
I've been in kind of a carpentry mood lately, and I was wondering if I was to whip up some headcabs made pretty much to origional specs, would people buy them? I have a lot of tools, and I hate to see them sitting idle.
Just trying to see If anyone would be interested. I just read a thread where a guy had a Rocket and no cab. This might be a project done this fall if anyone is interested. These would be figured Cherry cabinets.

That may be me. I'm working with Taylor at Amplified Nation right now but not an original 'Wreck cab. Sounds like a great idea and I would think there would be interest. Build it and they will come. :D

I see you're a neighbor. Enjoyed the CF ampfest video, maybe I can make it next year if it goes again.
Early brewers were primarily women, mostly because it was deemed a woman's job. Mesopotamian men, of some 3,800 years ago, were obviously complete assclowns and had yet to realize the pleasure of brewing beer.

I might be interested as well

We just recently moved to a new house that is currently sans garage/woodshop space, so my woodworking is on a hiatus for the moment :( ... but I just finished up a reverb rocket build that's feeling a little naked :D

I would be interested. My attempts at constructing head cabinets have looked haphazard at best.

Hi.. have you built a Wreck style cab yet?
If so post a picture.. I would be interested to see how it looks.

The problem I found in building really nice hardwood Wreck style cabs, or any style of hardwood cab for that matter, is the time and effort it takes to make them great means they are going to be expensive..
That is unless you are willing to work for minimum wage.. and honestly that is something I am just not going to do.
If you are going to build a basic cab and then cover it with tolex you can keep the cost down.. but a nicely figured hardwood cab will show every blemish so needless to say attention to detail is mandatory.
Most builders I know who have the skills to do exceptional hardwood cabs only build them as a hobby or occasionally for a friend.
This is where you can really take your time and build masterpieces..

If you have the skills it is definitely rewarding to do heirloom type of pieces, but don't expect to get rich building hardwood cabs.
I always think it is ironic when you spend 12 to 15 hours on a cab from start to finish, plus have $100 to $200 invested in materials, and someone expects you to sell it for less than $200

Just food for thought...

I hear you Distortion - I have put 10-15 coats on a head cab for personal /friends/ familly use. Figure in the labor cost and you're probably working for $2 an hour at the kind of prices people are prepared to pay for a decent regular cab.
Still fun though - never really been happy with one I've done yet.
Certainly not in you're league - I still cream my jeans every time I see a pic of one of your creations.
Jim - it's still a worthwhile endeavor.
Most of us can live with something less than perfection, especially given how much it costs to achieve it.
Surely the sound it puts out is paramount.
It's still important that it looks good.
Simplest way I can describe it ...
To have great sex in the dark, she doesn't have to look like Cameron Diaz.
But it wouldn't hurt either.

For a second my scanning eyes saw that as "Kirk Cameron".

Yeah, I was worried.

In response to Distortion's well founded comments,
I realize that there isn't a lot of money to be made at this. Especially when you consider the labor, time, money, and patience it takes to do the kind of work he does on finishing those cabs. Very, very nice stuff for sure. I bet Ken would have loved having Distortion building his cabs for him. Having said that, most original Wrecks I've seen pictures of, seem to have a thinner, less lustrous finish on them. I did an oil finish on mine, and used the somewhat unorthodox joinery methods seen done on the real deal. I feel like it captures the look of an origanal pretty well. I do know this, I enjoy building more that I enjoy finishing. I am really just thinking out loud here, not trying to make a bunch of money. I just have the tools and enjoy woodworking. Not only that, what is cooler than building a showcase for a great amp? I would be waiting for some cooler, less humid weather before starting anyway. Here is a link for my amp.
