New 70s Hybrid project (colour scheme?)

Post by ElectronAvalanche »

Hi there,

started my new 70s Hybrid project. Sort of like a take on the Lance Keltner Bludotone :D

I ordered a chassis from CE (thanks again Mark) and it arrived safely. Great chassis and superb packaging job. Recommended!!

How much more comfortable it is to have a chassis with everything drilled to specs.

My first amps used the Graydon Stuckey chassis (very nice as well, without silk-screened labels though). These came without a PT cutout, so for the amp using a Fender PT I had to make the cutout myself.

The boards for the 70s Hybrid are from Jason and they too are top-notch!

Pics will follow shortly, I have sourced most parts.

Still am pondering over which PT and OT to use.

I would love to use a PT with 5V supply for the relais, but getting one of those in Europe as a laydown X-former is very difficult.

Another option would be to use the Hammond Twin PT and a seperate 6V x-former, but again getting a chassismount 6V in Europe for a fair price is not easy.

I my other amps I use print-transformers hidden under the PS board.

Concerning the cabinet I am yet undecided on which Tolex/grillcloth combination to use.

I would opt for Fender rough brown with oxblood with gold stripes and white piping.

Would love to see some pics of silverface clones in their cabinets from other builders!

Cheers,

Electron

Hi,

RS comp has small toroid transformers.
e.g. a 7V/228mA (18x39 mm) for about €15.
Edit: order number is 278-6756

Hi,

RS comp also has this: 504-767 and some other small transformers.

Hello,
did you tried ingo_g@ig-transformatoren.com
for a all in one solution.
I had all specs in one PT for my D-Clone.

Tanks for all the suggestions concerning the 6V Transformers.

@Hans-Jörg

I wrote Ingo a message and he is looking into getting transformer end-bells for the laydown PT for my CE chassis.

Did you use the Marshall PT for your build with the 12V secondary?

Hi,
I took all from the Marshall PT from Ingo (EL34/100). No need for extra transformer :)
If I understood right, @markusw took the same for his newest "low plate Classic" projekt. He has more skills than me, so maybe he can give you support.

Pls. be advised that I cannot reccomend Ingo Gorges for the tranformers.
I'm not talking about the quality of the products that is great.
But The man is unreliable.
I'm still waiting since 3 or 4 years a set of transformers that has been paid in full and has never been delivered.
I know everything of the sad story of his Daughter. And i was telling him to take his time.
But I received from him tenths of mails telling me that he was going to deliver the goods, thing that he never done. I asked for a refund and he has never replied to my request.
And like me other similar stories are available in the sloclone forum.
Once again . I'm not talking about the products. just on the man that IMO is completely unreliable.
I still owe my 170 euros from him. And sorry, but i can't forget about this.
Ciao from Italy.

Here's a pic of my 70's clone. Please be aware that all references to Mr. D and 'Overdrive Special' have since been removed or covered-up.

@pamaz67:

I feel your pain. Maybe you should try and contact him again? I know that he is sometimes extremely slow, and I only bought one PT from him years ago (which is top quality).

@crbowman:

very nice! Although I really am not a fan of snakeskin Tolex.

What circuit did you implement, #40? Any inside pics?

I have read about the same complaints about Ingo over the years.
One excuse after the other.

Thanks! It's basically #40 with PAB, full loop, and updated relay switching.
I've been playing it for about a year and a half and really like it.
Here's the thread on it with more pics.

The project is coming along very slowly.

Ordered the PT and OT from Marble Amps in the Netherlands. The PT has a dedicated winding for the relay supply and enough juice for either EL34 or 6L6. OT is Marshall style (1k7 primary).

Still waiting for some other parts (choke, cabinet etc.) but managed to put the Logo on the chassis.

Next up:

populate the boards.

That looks great Electron.

Can you describe how you did the logo?

I've wanted to do that to my black CE chassis for quite a while now but never saw a technique that would work.

That empty space is crying out for a name! :D
