Silverface champ

The silverface comes with a 6v6 can a 6l6 just be plugged in there with no mods?

I don't believe the output transformer is up to the task.

IMHO, make a different baffle and put a good 10" in there. Or just speaker out to a larger cabinet. You'd be surprised at how much louder (and cleaner if you keep the volume down a bit) you can keep it with a better speaker. I have a ceramic blue pup in mine.

Good idea I have a weber blue and silver pup. I might give that a shot.
This amp is late 60s early 70s. Any value in it? Or would it be ok to mod it?
Like add verb or maybe dumble it in a way? I know there's not much to this amp but 5 watts single ended. Maybe up grade the pt and Ot an make it dual 6v6 or 6l6.

IMHO, unless you are going to change the cathode resistor to values better served for a 6L6, it's a moot point.

Concerning upgrading the PT; at typical higher(340>) Champ HT voltages about the max that can be wound on that frame size is about 115mA(stock PT is 60-70mA), which is barely adequate for two 6V6's and this of course that PT cannot be found on the shelf and will have to be custom wound.

Hmmm ok. So It is pretty much gonna stay 5 watt amp. What ate some mods I could do to it to reach dumble tones?

Not true!

David Allen at Allen amps sells an upgraded power tranny that is a drop in for for the silverface chassis cutout. I got mine used on fleabay. He also sells a nice upgraded output tranny as well that is much beefier than stock. Since a silverface is not considered by many to be a holy grail amp, it is no sin to mod one. In a single ended application this upgraded power tranny can run 6l6 or el34 no problem as far as capacity is concerned.

First of all, I think you misunderstood what I said. I didn't state that transformers were not available. I referenced the "higher" voltage Champ transformers. The Allen transformer is NOT the "higher" voltage transformer, it's 150mA @ only around 310V on the HT. If you want one that's "higher" in HT voltages with higher current, it will have to come off the custom shelf.

You cannot get 330-350V @150mA on the 022772 frame, I tried this with Heyboer last Fall and I have the specs that are the max that can be wound on that frame. Heyboer winds Allen transformers and my info comes directly from Heyboer.

If you want the higher voltages, here's about the max that can be wound on that frame, here the laminates are .250 thicker. If you drop the HT voltage requirement and increase the lam stack you can of course increase the HT rating and therein lies Allen's "fatstack style" 310V/150mA version.

330-0-330V @105mA
5V @ 3A
6.3V @ 2A

Biased accordingly, you can make it 8 watts easily. Play with plate voltages and tubes you can get 10-12 watts. Increase you plate voltages and parallel two 6V6's you get 25-26 watts with 25-30 watt iron.

A Champ is what it is, a Champ .............a Dumble it ain't.

I have Champ head box, blank chassis and using one my upright 330V/105mA Champ transformers the plan is to one day pinch a 12-15W D'lite into into Champ chassis for giggles.

I think Magnet Components now has a new upgrade PT and OT.

I was looking at Triode Store and saw it.

Yeah, they offer basically stock replacements. The PT is 325@70mA.

Champs are worth $300. I personally wouldn't muck with one that much. Stock, it's such a simple circuit, you could build one for $150 including wood and leather handle.

Dumble a Champ? That just sounds unpossible.

You might as well buy a blank chassis off eBay and build something up.

Yeah, I saw that. The upright Deluxe PT is cool as well.
