Well I dont see how this thread will ever help anyone in building an amp. And there is atleast 1 person offended here
If people dont like it when a noob has a question they should just not answer IMO.
Telling people to use the search function is fine but on the other hand no offense but the search function here is pretty useless, unless you've got a lot of spare time to sift through all the threads.
Either way removing that other thread was a huge step forward so I will shut up and get back learning
Thank you very much Dogears

It also helps to know how to use the search function properly. The instructions are vague in the search menu but if you know how to use it you can find your information quickly.

Ditto Cliff, how many people even use the wildcard(*) function.Cliff Schecht wrote:It also helps to know how to use the search function properly. The instructions are vague in the search menu but if you know how to use it you can find your information quickly.
Tough love time...........fellas get out of this instant gratification mindset and simply put in the work. If you are really serious about this game, then you will gladly spend time outside of holding a soldering iron and just looking at a layout. If that means spending thirty mins, an hour just browsing the search function then thats what it takes if you want to expand your knowledge base. IMHO, it's one of the key differences between a builder and just an assembler.
I can be low on empathy, hopefully this didn't hurt anyone's tender feelings.

Re: Is it just me...
We have the same people answering the same questions..
IMO...The Professional builders and guy's who have been here the longest hardly ever answer the basic FAQ they have answered many many times..(Can't blame them)..So it would make sense to me for those here that are still learning who already know the answers to some of the basic stuff that want to get involved to help out (even with a search) for those just coming in here is your chance.. This is a great way to become involved make friends...Before you know it you will form a group of people you choose to help and learn from (earn there trust and respect) get to know one another help each other out sharing info either publicly or PM.. I have learned and shared so much from the group I came up with who are amazingly gifted people and feel they all would help me anyway they could ..I would do the same..This is where the really GOOD stuff happens..Trust me!!
I hope This Helps!!

That's the way it should work, Tony. Formulating an answer to someone else's question is a great way to test yourself. If you are wrong, someone a little further up the ladder will chime in. I think this place has a rep for having a solid knowledge base. Let's keep it up!

Re: Is it just me...
Okay, I'm blushing. Bottom line is it's mostly due to the thought provoking discussion that goes on here. There's a broad mix of people that contribute, and that is the real key IMO. There's a whole spectrum of things to learn about from pure electronic theory to hands-on musicianship, studio/recording stuff, and sound reinforcement. Keeping it civil and on-topic is sometimes a challenge, but overall the S/N ratio here is about 20dB higher than some other places I could name!
Re: Is it just me...
I'm a noob. I've done tons of fabrication of aviation and medical oriented electronics. I've also been military trained in electronics and soldering. I've had years of assembly and R & D experience. So I've got the soldering and assembly skills.... But I've forgotten a bunch of things in the last 14 years since I moved into other things. I KNOW I'll need reference as I go through this build.martin manning wrote:Okay, I'm blushing. Bottom line is it's mostly due to the thought provoking discussion that goes on here. I have a D-kit coming in the near future and I'll be methodical and thorough in my build. I'll also use the forum search to the max, but I do have one observation. As I didn't receive a "comprehensive" schooling in guitar amps, there are some things I know I want to be well informed about ("dressing" the wiring for one example) before I do it. If there isn't the info I need after a few common sense searches, then I'll ask. If I get flamed for asking "a stupid or redundant question", so be it. I wear big boy pants, so I'll deal with it.
Chances are, even moderarely experienced builders find little things that they'd never considered before that might impact the quality of a build. The resources are here (or there) and I'm grateful for them, but I wasnt to build the best quality amp as possible. I don't just want it to be functional, I want it to be exceptional. That is my personality...
I might use the resources, but I will not post very often if I find "drama'. I divorced drama about 10-15 yeras ago and I'm over that, even on the web. From everything I've seen, this seems like a pretty good community. These is some "history", but that's life. I just hope I can contribute to the technical side of things (in the future) and not to the drama.
Cheers.

Kevster, it sounds like you are well prepared; should be a fun ride.
There is always going be That A**hole Guy who shows up every so often to create some drama, but for the most part it doesn't last long.

Re: Is it just me...
I'd like to chine in and just say that I am very grateful for this forum and all those who contribute in a positive way.
I am and will always be a newbie in the sense that I'm confident that there will always be those here who know far more that I do.
I build slowly, get stuck, ask questions and I'm always grateful for the feedback.
If no one answers my question I take it as a sign that I should do more research or come up with a better problem.
I'm not really confident enough to offer technical assistance so I try and give back with threads which illustrate my learning process as a means of helping others who are on the same level.
Many here have been on the forum for quite a while and I think it's natural to loose sight of what's it's like to be a new comer to the world of tube amps. We see the posts of wanting the Fender to become a Marshall with a Dumble channel while maintaining the reverb and vibrato. I think the community is very kind to these beginners. If anyone ever gets offended by someone suggesting that they do more research, that is their problem.
Truthfully, I have become weary of the pissing and moaning over the SSS. As if an amp could make you a SVR or a wealthy amp builder.
I also find the snotty "my capacitor is bigger than yours" and "my high and low impedance lines never cross" attitude of some irritating but I also find that the posturing on this forum to be far less than anywhere else.
These small irritants aside let us not forget that the information, technical support, enthusiasm and general goodwill of this forum is unparallelled.
Peace
Eric

Re: Is it just me...
And you love to build piece of shit amps that you claim defy the laws of tone. Eric OTOH while maybe not the most experienced builder has engaged us all in some very interesting and informative conversation. You remind me of a friend I have that had too much money, too much time and a rudimentary understanding of electronics. Makes for some shit amps with expensive parts.. Go troll some other forums!
