Marshall style hi-gain

Post by dcribbs1412 »

My first Marshall style hi-gain build single input
Sorry I know its worthless without clips

sounds pretty decent for 80's rock
no real clean headroom...but decent tones for sure
using loop with dlator and intellefex rack unit, still sounds like me...
6V6's (bias around 16ma) 18watt PT, Allen 30OT and a MC 125C1A style choke..through a EV12L...kinda fun to play, its a keeper..gotta get it in a cab...
thanks Mark for all your help

Very nice Darin! I like IRC resistors myself; very quiet while sounding very warm and natural. I built a 6V6 Plexi myself and you're right, no real clean headroom...but that's not why we build them  8)

Nice!

Are those IRC resistors the GS3 type?

I was trying to find where to buy those and I see that Handmade Electronics carries them.

Anybody else?
Tom

Don't let that smoke out!

Darin,

How high are you running your 6V6 plate voltages?

Tom,

Yes, those are the GS3 type which come in 1% and 5% tolerance. Mouser stocks a limited selection of them.

Hey Mark
this thing is getting more fun the more I play it
it would be outahand with 2 el34's
added the boost/bright switches on both gain controls
they are not subtle...will have to learn this amps nuisances
to use them properly.
Not much adjustment on TMB controls
Changed the tone stack to 47k and put a 470pf ceramic cap(from 33k and 500 mica) on the way out this morning. Not sure what/if any effect this will
have.
also your Swamper cab looks great
Think I'm going to gather stuff and give it a try ASAP

This amp has caused FBOBHD
I've had flashbacks of big hair days

Awesome! I figured it was pretty high given the 16mA bias you quoted. I'm guessing you are using JJs. I find they take that kind of abuse pretty well  My build had 460V on the plates. I used Vibrolux clone iron. Sounded great. I built a JCM-type 2x6V6 too and really liked that one. My OT was a 20W Marshall 2061 clone (7k6 primary IIRC).

Yes JJ's it is
wondered about some NOS 6V6's but I figured
much if not all the tone is from the pre.
is that correct?
I did a 6V6 HRM with around 460V(JJ's) on the plates and I really like it also
I just gotta figure out something to build using my sets of old 6V6's

WOW talk about memories.
Excellent song/video!
Thanks Colossal

I have tried NOS in those amps but they don't appreciate the high voltages so you have to bias cold or they will sound great, but not last very long at all LOL!

Haha, yes, what a great song! I think I wore that cassette out as a kid. I figured that was appropos for my 666th post and perfect for a high gain Marshall thread! (waving the heavy metal horns)

How much power do you get out of NOS 6V6, do they put out same as EL84 or less? Just curious, been trying to decide whether to build something with EL84 or 6V6. Sounds like you guys have been there done that, hence the question.

Hi Ian444
not real sure
both depending on the circuit
but consider an 18 watt Marshall with 2 el84
and a 5e3 Fender with 6V6's at around 12-15 watts
pretty close power wise
tone wise is another story

Best to find an amp you like the sound of... research it and build it
while asking as many questions as you can..in the end you will
probably build more than one any way :)
Just my suggestion

Thanks Darin,

I found this clip here, similar amp I think, AX84 October "Club version", a plexi variant.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4A1VzNfN ... re=related

I really like the sound on this clip. There is a hint of metal in the mids. It uses the JJ 6V6's, same as yours.

Does your amp sound similar to this?

Nice build you did BTW. Is that a MV beside the 2 vol pots? And a send/return loop on the back? On youtube I couldn't find an 18W with EL84's that I liked as much as the clip above, they sounded a bit thinner/less meat to me, but, there's a lot in the playing, recording, speakers etc so I'm not sure if youtube is a good guide or not. The old brain's going tick, tick, tick...the wheels turn a bit slower these days :)

I also saw the clip of your build Colossal, that is a bit of a masterpiece I must say. The 6 switches look real nice on the front panel too.

Hi Ian
like you say its hard to tell from a youtube clip but
the build I did in this post has some similar tones...probably a little more
gain on tap than the AX84 October
probably not as much chime as the ASAT clip, but similar depending on the guitar
I'm sure coaxing a few different tones from this build is possible...
as with any given time to experiment
I have a habit of cranking an amp and then slowly finding a sweetspot
wife hates it...(I'll get it down honey just a little more time :)

Yes there is a MV after the 2 gain controls...and a fx loop is on the back
this amp(like most) really changes for the better running through a tube buffered loop and adding some delay and/or reverb and using as EV12L or a ToneTubby Alnico speaker.Havent used it with my V30 yet

I changed the NFB resistor to a 47k and I think I like it better than
the original 82K..seemed to soften the highs just a smidge so
when I engage the bright switches which I changed to 331pf on Gain1
its better may try a 270 or 221.
In the end I say jump in build one or similar and you will be happy...it is a fun amp to play and tweak and is friendly to LP as well as Strat guitars
