Help me voice my overdrive please!

Post by noworrybeefcurry »

Hey all, I am new to this forum and i could really use some help.

I have been struggling to voice the OD on my first build for some time now. The amp is a non NFB, fixed bias, 6V6 type. The clean side is a fender AB763 circuit with some mods.

-added mid boost
-three way bright
-increased mid pot (100k instead of 25k)

The gain is cascaded over two more triodes, each with 220k/3.3k resistors, 4.7uf and 1uf bypass caps, and a post OD tone stack (330pf, 47k, .047uf, .1 uf, 250k, 500k, 25k)

The clean is nice, but the drive is still.......ok. It has a bit a fizzyness that i cant get rid off. Could anyone lend some insight as far as how i could get a much more aggressive drive that i can still smooth out, and id like a much more saturated drive aswell.

-Thanks

I think I know where you want to go with this: Separate the bass and mid pot grounds if you haven't already. Rebuild your OD like a 70's style with a 220k/33k OD entrance and put 250pf snubbers on each OD stage if needed. Both grid resistors should be 47k or 56k.

thanks alot bro, I added the resistors that you suggested and It made a world of difference. The drive is a little brighter and more touch sensitive. But I was unclear about your suggestion to separate the mid and bass grounds. How would I go about that and what effect would it have.

Sorry, wire up the tone stack using the Dumble wiring rather than the Fender wiring.

The only way to know if you like it is to try it. I would recommend making it a non-HRM, 70's style. That'll get you in the neighborhood of the deluxe-on-10, if that's what you're after.
