Just what we need........another 183 build in progress
Here's a #183 like build in progress, nothing usual except I did forgo the very large filter caps.
PT: Heyboer Twin PT from Jason
OT: Heyboer C1998 1.72K, 100W
Resistors: Mepco Electra CF, Speer KOA MF, Mepco MF@ V1, Piher CF @V2.
PreAmp tubes: GE JAN 12AX7WA
PwrTubes: Gold Lion KT77
Boards: AGB (Jason)
Chassis: CE
Pots I converted to solid shaft and the stealth 5K>2.15K pres pot conversion.

Very nice looking build! I have the same PCB set and am getting ready to order some parts for a 183 build. I am wondering about the difference between the 'real' 183 power supply and what you built. I would assume that you really don't know the answer to this, but I thought I'd mention it anyway. I'd appreciate any thoughts...

Looking good! I'll be starting on mine soon, also using one of Jason's PS boards, mine has an extra pair of PS caps for the internal loop tube.
What make/type are the non-6PS caps?

Thanks, this is actually a rush build for mevibratoking wrote:Very nice looking build! I have the same PCB set and am getting ready to order some parts for a 183 build. Correct I have no idea. However, I'm not sure if an additional 60uF is a key component of that 183 sauce or not. Although, with these amps I've found that it's not neccesarily the common overt stuff, it can be the small stuff that makes a difference.
I've never build one with Marshall iron, so I was mainly curious of the voicing. In the end, I'm not try to chase #183's tail. Hopefully I can just make a half way decent sounding amp.

That's what I'm aiming for too. In that regard, ie not making an exact clone, I'm thinking of making mine an HRM, tone pots on the faceplate, and two master vols., plus the internal buffered loop. Means I will have to cut the chassis a bit and use faceplates.
Re: Just what we need........another 183 build in progress
Thanks David, they are the NTE MLR series that I happen to find locally. They look like those found on #183. However, considering that NTE is a reseller it's no telling what the actual composition of those caps were.David Root wrote:Looking good! FYI, that NOS GE JAN 12AX7WA on the left I purchased from Greengirl.

Tonemerc, where did you get the 68K 1W Piher and the blue 22K on V1A grid? They look exactly like the real thing. What make is the 22K? Also the blue 1/2W resistors, are they Vishay Beyschlags or NOS?
OOps I checked your first post! So the 22K is a MEPCO MF.

Down to the last 15 mins, it's finally just minus the PT and knobs.

Thanks, I got busy today cranking out ammo and never made it around to powering it up.SoundPerf wrote:Nice build, very clean. Good job!

Voltages
Dropping string: 2.76K>22K>2.2K
Unloaded B+: 474V
Loaded B+: 462V
GE JAN 12AX7WA V1: 190/196V
GE JAN 12AX7WA V2: 191/198V
GE JAN 12AX7WA V3: 319/314V
Gold Lion KT77 V4-V7: 462V/456V screens
Bias string: 3.9K>10K>18K
I had change the bias tail to bring those Gold Lion KT77s inline.
Bias: -43.3, -39.1, -39.6, -43.1
FET 2N4416A: 25.4V, 16.3V, which is hotter than you should normally have, but actually it sounds pretty decent and I think I'm leaving as is.

Great job! I never grow tired of seeing these builds. I'm interested to hear your thoughts on the Marshall iron; what it brings to the party.ToneMerc wrote:Just what we need........another 183 build in progress

Thanks..........well here's my two pennies after a few moments with a S/S/H & Thiele EV 12L cabinet setup. If you are chasing some of the more warmer round Dumble tones, I don't think this voicing is it and it wouldn't be my first choice.Colossal wrote:Great job! I never grow tired of seeing these builds. However, I'm amazed at the rich bark of the OD crunch tone and how relatively balanced the amp itself is. It's definitely creeps into the Rock territory with lots of versatility from tweeking the OD trim.....it's a keeper for sure!
Hopefully, I can get a buddy of mine who happens to be a big fan of the brighter RF tone to come over in the next few days. I'll hook up the Dumblelator, 2290 and some verb in the loop and see how it really sounds.
