What's the best and worst part?

Best - The first notes, and the first time the foot-switching works with a guitar signal running through it. After playing the amp a few hours, when it really kinda breaks in all at once and the tone gets really sweet. The first time your ODS breaks into beautiful feedback.
Worst - Wiring heaters. Especially RE-wiring heaters. Or when your solid-core wire breaks and is now too short, and it is coming from underneath your circuit board, so you have to nearly disassemble everything to replace that one wire without splicing. (This only happened once, and that was because I was stupid.)

Wife: How many amps do you need?
Me: Just one more...

Some of those old ass-holes are just plain cantankerous, no-matter who they are directing their frustrations at, and it probably isn't personal. Just let it roll off your back, and remember that time is on your side.Lonely Raven wrote:Sorry if that seemed bitchy...I was getting it at both ends this weekend. It's just not fun.vibratoking wrote: I have to admit that I don't understand the comments regarding the old-guys or however it was written. Of the thousands of posts on here, a tiny fraction of them have been written with comments that are without merit. Electronics is a detailed subject by nature and should be treated so. I would like to thank the guys that pay attention to detail and provide detailed information via post for all to read and understand. I would venture to say that without it, the paint-by-numbers guys wouldn't be succeeding.

I have 2 points for you.Lonely Raven wrote: Sorry if that seemed bitchy...I was getting it at both ends this weekend. The experienced guy paints by numbers more than the beginner. Learn the numbers by wrote, that's civilization standing on something. You are doing good.
Being a part-time Porsche mechanic for 30 years, I hear you. temp sensors and wires all over and parts that you can't test without another part and special processes to test a part that require known things that you have to guess... and adjusting valves hot.

Ever order that one super awesome guitar/car/mic/cab/pedal you've dreamed about for years, you count down the days until it ships, and when it finally comes, you feel like a kid on Christmas morning?
Best part is giving a client that experience.
Worst part is dropping a power transformer on your toe.

Some of these are funny. I've only built one amp ... Brown Note D'Lite 22/33.
Best Part ... that first note ... and having it work right from go. Kind of expecting smoke and end up playing for a couple of hours. Priceless!!
Worst Part ... running out of wire a couple of days into the build and having to wait more than a week for some more to arrrive ... every resisitor, cap, bolt ... but dead stop waiting for teflon coated wire. Geez!!
I really loved the experience ... but probably won't build another. It's still about having an amp that does what I want. I got a couple of amps now that do cover all that I want to do. But man what an experience.

super
the best for me is after 20+ finaly being able to express what I want on the guitar and theres NO WAY i would have that without the amp garage, as what was missing was a rocket.
the worst part is the addiction,I dont kneed those right now but I'm going to grab them anyway cause its a great deal and I'll use them somewhere and what its dinner time, I just had lunch ,what happend I was just reading old threads. whoops

Re: What's the best and worst part?
I've been doing this for about eight or nine years now, absolutely ZERO prior background or knowledge.
I have always looked at it a bit differently. Instead of congratulating myself on what I've learned, I look at the process as one of pushing back the boundaries of my ignorance. I look at it as reducing my IQ, -- that's my Ignorance Quotient!
Naturally, every now and then I make a fool of myself by jumping to conclusions, caused of course by my "IQ".
If you embrace that perspective you'll never get a swelled head, nor will you ever stop pushing back!

Re: What's the best and worst part?
Amp building is 80% planning and 20% doing. One of the best parts is when I decide the 80% is over so I can get on to the 20%. That said, the best part is having a project. I have learned to have no sense of hurry. This alone has brought a great deal of enjoyment. When time is short, I'll just do one thing. I have built a whole amp in few days, and I've had some builds stretch out over several months. I have come to enjoy the latter. Speed building isn't for me.
I think everyone loves bringing a project to completion so it can be played. It's always a surprise, even when the result is what I imagined.

Yaas boss!
Re: What's the best and worst part?
Best part for me is the anticipation of playing the amp and also firing it up on the first try and hitting those first sweet notes and saying to myself "Oh my"
Worst part is finding out that a layout was updated and you have to go in there and de solder some of your initial neat and tidy work.
sometimes it's best to wait til the smoke clears.

Best Part: Firing the amp up finally
Worst Part: Firing the amp up finally
It sucks when you fire it up and nothing works, or worse something blows... but at the same time that excitement of what could be gives you such a rush...
Thankfully after a bit of building you learn most of what to look for.
