Dumble turret board

Ok, so I was commissioned to build a ODS serial 124 by a customer. I do not normally do this, but I knew this customer well. I don't really use eyelet boards too much, so I built a turret board with a layout technique put forth by Doug Hoffman. Just wanted to let someone know that it sounds nice, and is virtually silent (when not in OD mode, which is expected). Nice amp, I never actually played one.

Considering building the boards as a board kit (as I do this for other amps and sell them as kits, less chassis, sockets, iron). Was wondering what people think of this as compared to the eyelets, etc. Here is a not so great pic of one, halfway built.

That's a cool build. Somewhere one the forum there's another turret / Dumble.

In terms of board kits I'm not sure how well they would be received. Dumbles and Train wrecks have a lot of their mystique and possibly their sound wrapped up in the component selection, layout and lead dress. Guys are more inclined to build exact replicas than to stray from the standard design. Also there are excellent layouts and schematics in the files section.

That said, the allure of turrets is powerful..............

I built my first one using turrets. However, it was the traditional style layout with the same component placement and lead dress. That being said, I don't there's anything inherently wrong with using turrets.

Neverthless, IMHO if you radically deviate from the layout then it's no longer a Dumble, it's just an ODS styled circuit that just happens to be using turrets and should not be sold or stated as a Dumble board.

From a customer perspective of someone thats interested in buying boards to build a Dumble amp, give me 3 reasons why I should deviate from the norm and buy boards that are laid out different from actual known layouts when traditional "legacy" boards/documentation are readily available?

"ODS" is also trademarked - by a forum member, as I recall.

Therein lies the rub. How to market such a board set without invoking either "Dumble" or "ODS"?

The more parts availability the better for all.

We have other suppliers here on TAG but the products don't always support the design one is trying to build. It's refreshing seeing chassis, boards, transformers and etc. being offered here. Soon perhaps D-cabs as well.

My first 50W ODS built on a Bassman used a turret board, but I prefer through hole eyelets.

IMHO--Turret boards are kinda cool and get a nice mechanical connection but are kind of a pain to change out parts if you do any wrapping of the leads..If your a tweaker and like to modify things after the fact eyelets are generally better.. Just did a JTM-45 for myself using the turret's..If anyone cares!

If your going to mount those filter caps on the board JTM style then the board has to be a bit wider to accommodate them..If you filter the off the board you can cut them down quite a bit..

Thanks Darin!!.. I picked up the transformer off E-bay with the hopes it still worked and it sounds pretty good..You could mount those things on a manhole cover and it would KILL!!..It has wayyy more headroom than the typical JTM which is what I like.. AB carbon comps in most spots and AB pots as well!!..Gotta have a JTM in the collection!!
FWIW the A470 is what Fisher used in the Rockets and I believe some Pool's.. Full Bandwidth @ 35 watts and can handle a pair of 88's if you want to go up.. I have some Mo-valve 66's I want to load in it but for now running a pair of JJ KT-77's for farting around the house..These are such fun builds..
