Re: DLM (reprise)
i like that pro junior as well!
Re: DLM (reprise)
The Absinthe is about 20W - 25W depending on how I set it up. It'll take most popular octal outputs, so the wattage varies with which tubes you are using. It does have the presence control.
The little Pro Jr. is the prototype for a new model I am working on. The only thing Pro Jr. about it is the chassis and cabinet. Everything else was gutted and chucked. All 6SL7s in the preamp and PI, with a cathode biased pp 6V6 output. The crappy little Fender speaker was yanked in favor of a Fane Medusa 10-75, and man does it roar!

Re: DLM (reprise)
agreed on that fender! Nice work! I gutted my junior to make a liverpool which i still cant stop from humming....sigh......oh well...it will make sense someday lol. You like the 6v6 better than el84 for the pp design? are they louder as well as darker?
Re: DLM (reprise)
I actually favor EL84s for the most part, however 6V6s are very versatile and robust. The fact that I used chassis mount tube sockets on all builds made this an easy octal conversion. I would have had to make adapter plates to use noval sockets whereas the octals dropped right into the existing chassis holes.zambo wrote:agreed on that fender! Nice work! This amp is pretty interesting and sounds very cool. TW style preamp, concertina PI, DC filaments for the 6SL7s, liverpool power supply, and some other stuff. It has a simple Tone control that is similar to the trem side of a Marshall 18watt. It was an exercise of how to make this all work in such a small package. The oversized PT and OT made speaker clearance a challenge, but it did all fit (just barely

I just looked at your website. very cool! We are almost neighbors. i live in Napa.

Cool! We should get together sometime and make some noise.zambo wrote:I just looked at your website. very cool! We are almost neighbors. i live in Napa.
The website is due for replacement soon. I have a guy working on it, so soon it will be fully functional.

Re: DLM (reprise)
dartanion nice amps
The DLM, even the controls match the Komet to me.
Gain
Treble
Bass
Master
Harmonics (Presence)
Slope (Midrange)
The mid range (Slope) is being used in place of the mid control and cut control the other is a presence (harmonics). This one has a master control though.
I think I will just go that route and see what happens.

Re: DLM (reprise)
Thanks Mark! Much appreciated.
I would love to build a DLM, however the information is all over the place and nothing or no one has nailed it down to fact. I love SE amps, so the Absinthe was an exercise in making an SE Express type amp. I think it turned out quite nice.
Has anyone here built a Derailment? I was thinking of converting this old SFVC to that circuit for fun. No loss as this Vibro Champ was a basket case to begin with.

Re: DLM (reprise)
I agree, Nice looking amps Dart, and agree again - it would be quite nice to build a DLM and I'll agree a third time - what we know is all over the place without much hope to ever really know for sure.dartanion wrote:Thanks Mark! Much appreciated.

Still seems like the worst that could come of an effort to build something based on what we do know would likely result in all of us learning something we don't know. Of course we always need a new amp to add to our stockpile.
Looking forward to the iterations of the DLM - whatever they may be.

For reference in this discussion, here's a photo of the DLM with the knobs labeled since they are hard to read.

Re: DLM (reprise)
has anyone actualy heard the real dlm thats on here? @ Dart, lets get together and make noise! that would be fun for sure! I am finding that these single ended wreck type designs seem to be a LOT LOUDER than most other amps rated at the same watts. anyone else have that experience? I was playing my 10 watt next to a 50 watt laney and just bruising it bad. I could have gone louder too. Its a little strange.
Re: DLM (reprise)
Or there may be one half that remains unused... Ken didn't always use the whole 12AX7, you recall.Colossal wrote:Since the DLM has two 12AX7 that gives us either four gain stages or three with a cathode follower...

I find that harmonically rich amps sound louder, watt for watt.zambo wrote:has anyone actualy heard the real dlm thats on here? @ Dart, lets get together and make noise! that would be fun for sure! Ah, that's a great point Zippy. That's another possible scenario for 2 preamp tubes:Zippy wrote:Or there may be one half that remains unused... 1) 3 gain stages, 1 unused
2) 3 gain stages, 1 cathode follower
3) 2 gain stages, 1 cathode follower, 1/2 PI
4) 4 stages used
