I love my '70s 50W w/12AT7 PI. My Bluesmaster HRM I love too, that is a 4x5881 not 6L6GC but, still four power tubes, about 60W or so..

If you are going for that Texas flood/ velvet glove tone (apart from the Dumbleland) and in an ODS style the early 2n'd generation clean tone w/TS 9 I think will get you pretty close (w/ the low plate classic not far behind) IMO.. This will also get you close to the Lindley tone as well..Do a 100w w/ 1/2 power switch..Don't know about Gilmore or Kimmock..

Good Luck..

The low plate classic you're refering to, is it the #124 low plate classic?

Chip,
I believe #124 was built in 1984 as a low plate classic. (100K plates and 1K5 cathodes)
Then in 1988 HAD updated the amp to the Skyline tone stack, changed the Deep to Mid boost, and what else?
The stack with the 100K slope resistor, 350pf treble cap, 100K mid pot and .05uF mid cap, 250K bass pot with 1K8 tail to ground and no cap across the bass pot is the classic stack I believe.
Oh and the 100K slope resistor.
The Skyline made the slope 150K, treble cap is 300pf in series with the .002uF mid boost.
250K mid pot with .01uF mid cap, 500K bass pot with .001uF across it and the 10K tail to ground.
Mid Boost now instead of Deep switch.
Anybody correct me where I'm wrong.
In the file section there is a schematic of the original #124 and then one after the 1988 update.

Re: So whats your Favorite tuning :)
Thanks Tony and Tom,
I'm considering the #124 classic for my next winter build.

Does it look or sound anything like this? The Ripper circuit is basically a bluesmaster clean stage driving the overdrive stage that consists of one gain stage driving a cathode follower tone stack. Think Fender Bassman (5F6) or Marshall Plexi.

And with a 12AV7 in the OD section which I think is a little smoother and more expressive:

I just have to ask...
I'd like to push this discussion a little...
If you could enlarge just a bit, what are the characteristics which
dictate the list order of these amps?
What do you prefer about one genre of amps over the others?
Playability/tone/sustain/versatility? Usability with more than one instrument type?
Perhaps more importantly, at least to me, what do you dislike that
puts an amp lower on your list?
Why is the Bluesmaster less pleasant than the 70's types?
At least in some of the lists, 183, the grail dumble, comes in the
middle of the pack. Why?
Is there a correlation between HRM and list order?
TIA

Please understand that IMO an answer to this question is of no practical relevance at all. - Max

For me this is all rather opinionated and highly subjective..My list is compiled by which amp I walk to first and better suits my style and mood at the time..I have friends that love and take a liking to amps at the bottom of my list and some if not most of the later Marshall guys don't really connect with the earlier 70's style amps and flip out over the HRM's and Bluesmasters... If your looking for comparisons in the different Dumble topology's I would say the most notible would have to be the breakup characteristic/quality like when and where how they break up!!
For instance the Bluesmaster built around the later Marshall 2204 type output/presence section which develops more PI distortion and different harmonic content than say the Non HRM (Fender style PI) and vastly different than the 2nd generation PI using the 12AT type inverter which again clips differently.. This is just one example and others here can add to this however this is a big one for me..
They all have a sort of Dumble vibe to them sing/sustain etc.. and if youve played various Dumble designs and can perhaps connect to that so IMHO these are all a variations on a theme..You just have to toss all the terminology and comparisons and hype/BS aside and find the one you connect with..That's my advice.
I Hope This Helps!!
