Driving Clean Stage with Clean Boost Pedal?

Post by exocet »

Has anyone tried driving the clean stage of a high plate skyliner with a clean boost pedal such as an exotic RC?
I'm happy with the OD stage of my amp but would like a different OD sound available. I'm not a huge fan of OD pedals so was wondering what the clean stage sounds like when driven hard, ie clean driven into overdrive without OD stage engaged. Is it 'musical' or dirge? I don't have a clean boost pedal to test out but like the look of the Exotic RC because of the EQ options.

Any opinions on subject?

I am not sure a clean boost would give you a good overdrive. I have been using a modified Range Master clone to give me more overdrive with amps that are already distorting. That works well, think Brian May and Richie Blackmore. I just tried what you are thinking with my amp set clean and at bedroom levels it was just a highter volume clean and too clanky sounding. I am interested in Xotic pedals too mainly the EP-1 and was told that it has alot more output than a Range Master but i still think to get a good overdrive you will need some clipping device whether tube or solid state.

Thanks for that, given that the PI is post MV; that stage isn't going to impart overdrive artifacts when driven purely from the clean stage and I've read that the PI in this type of amp doesn't sound too good when pushed hard.

I wonder whether switching the LNFB on V1 would help to impart more overtones when driven from a clean boost pedal?

I do that as well using a BYOC tri-boost, some very cool retro type tones with that combo.

The tri-boost also has some clean boosts which I've tried with the clean side, I'm less than thrilled. I like using a nice subtle OD then kicking it over the top with the tri-boost, you might like that.

A clean boost (eg SOV 2) works well into PAB.

V1 with LNFB engaged sounds horrible to me when overdriven...
